The movements to buy local and to know your grower have heightened public awareness of who is growing their food. More importantly, it’s made people aware of how their food is grown and of food sustainability. Many have educated themselves and become steadfast organic consumers.
While this discernment is welcomed, it’s also an incomplete picture of the organic industry, especially the organic foodstuffs sold in your local grocery store that are produced by big corporate farms...
A couple of years after purchasing WhiteWave Inc, Dean Foods stopped using organic soy beans for the Silk soy milk brand and changed the label from “organic” to “natural”. Many loyal customers never noticed the subtle label change since the price remained the same. In all fairness, Silk does sport the non-GMO Project Verified seal and no longer touts the “natural” wording.
A consumer unacquainted with organic foods and the vast difference between all natural and certified organic probably never notices this kind of change in the label. In fact, some consumers interchange the two terms and assume all natural means healthy or even organic.
