Eighty U.S. troops have deployed to the Central African nation of Chad to assist forces in the international search for the almost 300 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the Islamist radical group Boko Haram, President Obama said Wednesday in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner.

"These personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area," the letter said. "The force will remain in Chad until its support in resolving the kidnapping situation is no longer required."

Chad is on Nigeria's northeast border.
