The Barrel Bombs of Syria: Each New War Comes With A Horrifying New Innovation — Video

A barrel bomb is a type of improvised explosive device first used by the Syrian Air Force during the Syrian civil war and later by the Iraqi forces during Anbar clashes. They are typically made from a barrel that has been filled with high explosives, with possibly shrapnel and/or oil, and then dropped from a helicopter. Due to the large amount of explosives that can be packed into a barrel, their poor accuracy and indiscriminate use in civilian urban areas, the resulting detonations have been devastating. The "Barrel Bomb" was originally developed by the Syrian government as a cheap, do-it-yourself (but devastating) bomb that could be dropped at low altitudes from helicopters on specific targets. Depending on the size of the barrel, the bombs could contain as much as 3500lbs of explosives.  After the Syrian rebels started deploying anti-aircraft weapons, the Syrian government began dropping the Barrel Bombs at much higher altitudes. Thus, precision was greatly diminished and who or what the bombs hit became random, making it the worlds newest weapon of mass terror.—Ronald David Jackson

Darayya City - Syria

The following video footage was taken in Darayya City, which is about five miles south-west of Damascus,
the capital of Syria. It is considered
a suburb of Damascus.

*There's some question as to whether all the bombs shown here are actually Barrel Bombs since such bombs are dropped from helicopters. Therefore, any explosion seen here that doesn't show the bombs dropping in free fall may well be regular 2,000 pound bombs dropped from fighter jets. Any bombs shown with parachutes are not Barrel Bombs. (Video compiled by kam1212 from footage recorded by DaryaRevlution).
