Gun Packing Somali Jihadists Demand Muslim Bus Passengers Identfy Christian Passengers — They Refuse

Somali militants sprayed a Kenyan bus with bullets on Monday, killing two people, but a passenger said he and fellow Muslims had defied demands from the attackers to help identify Christian travelers. The attack took place in Mandera, in northeast Kenya. Abdi Mohamud Abdi, a Muslim who was among the passengers, said that more than 10 Shabab militants had boarded the bus and ordered the Muslim passengers to split away from the Christians, but that they had refused. “We even gave some non-Muslims our religious attire to wear in the bus so that they would not be identified easily,” he said.

A leading commander of Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has been killed along with 200 other militants in a rare victory for Nigeria’s armed forces, according to reports.

One Nigerian army officer said a feared commander known only as Amir was among the dead after a battle on Friday in Konduga town, 35 kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and birthplace of the extremist group.

Also killed were a Boko Haram video journalist and a suicide bomber, he said.

There were no military casualties, according to the officer and a civilian self-defence group that fights alongside the soldiers. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to speak to reporters.

Boko Haram has captured a string of towns in recent weeks stretching over 320 kilometres alongside Nigeria’s north-east border with Cameroon in a new campaign to create an Islamic caliphate, mimicking the Isis group in Syria and Iraq.

The extremists also have attacked a town and villages across the border in Cameroon, but that country’s state radio said Cameroonian troops beat them off and forced them back across the border into Nigeria.

A month after declaring an Islamic State-like caliphate in Northeastern Nigeria, Boko Haram militants have reportedly surrounded the Borno State capital of Maiduguri, where residents expect an attack on what could be the group's largest and most symbolic seizure yet.

Founded in 2002, Boko Haram, which roughly translates to "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language, has killed thousands of people in northeastern Nigeria in the last five years. As its control in the region has expanded, Boko Haram has been met with an ineffective but equally brutal response from the Nigerian Army, which Amnesty International has accused of committing war crimes.

Fighting has spread across the Eastern border into Cameroon, where the government estimated that 100 Boko Haram fighters were killed last weekend in clashes with its troops. On Friday, the Nigerian military reportedly killed 200 militants and a senior Boko Haram commander during in a battle in Konduga, a town about 20 miles outside of Maiduguri.

Maiduguri has long been a power base for Boko Haram, where experts say the group maintains a key network of sympathizers among its residents. The Kanuri ethnic group concentrated in Borno State has long felt neglected by Nigeria's central government in Abuja and its commercial capital of Lagos.

"The insurgents have surrounded Maiduguri and are nursing the ambition of attacking the city from all directions," the Borno Elders Forum said in a statement released this week.

"The insurgents have rendered impassable almost all the roads leading to Maiduguri," they said.

Ryan Cummings, chief security analyst for Sub-Saharan Africa at Red24 and member of the Nigeria Security Network, told VICE News that the group's fighters, who are adept at brutal smash and grab attacks, would probably have trouble maintaining control of Maiduguri, home to more than 1 million people.

"If Boko Haram was indeed to capture Maiduguri, it would be highly unlikely that the sect would have the operational capacity to actually hold the town, particularly against any sustained counteroffensives by the Nigerian military," Cummings said.

But, he added, "It does seem to be the case that, from an operational perspective, Boko Haram has strengthened over the past few weeks."

Syria's Western-backed opposition called on Saturday for U.S. airstrikes against the Islamic State extremist group as the jihadists captured three northern villages, putting them within striking distance of a mainstream rebel stronghold.

Islamic State fighters have overrun nearly a dozen towns and villages in Aleppo province this week, crushing what little resistance they have encountered. Those gains threaten rival factions' supply lines to neighboring Turkey and squeeze the mainstream armed opposition's position in the country's largest city, Aleppo, which is also under assault by President Bashar Assad's forces.
With the mainstream rebels' foothold in Aleppo becoming increasingly precarious, the Syrian National Coalition urged the international community to "quickly support the Free Syrian Army with weapons and ammunition" so it could "defend its people."

"We call on the international community to use the American air force, or those of any other country to support the Free Syrian Army," the coalition said in a statement on Saturday, referring to the group's military wing.

The coalition has long appealed for more robust military support from the West to help in its fight to oust Assad, and more recently to counter the rise of Islamic extremists.

ISIS just captured the Iraqi town of Sinjar in the first major defeat of Kurdish forces. Religious groups that had taken refuge there are in imminent danger of being massacred.

In a major defeat for Kurdish forces the Iraqi town of Sinjar was captured Sunday by the group known as ISIS, now calling itself the Islamic State. This is the Kurds first major loss to ISIS and a catastrophe for the religious minorities who had taken refuge in the area and are now at imminent risk of being slaughtered.

Reports from the region describe an unfolding tragedy with young women being abducted, religious monuments destroyed, and the ISIS flag now hanging over government buildings.

Without Western champions and sympathizers, the non-Christian religious minorities of Nineveh province are being slowly exterminated, driven off, or forced into hiding.

The Sinjar mountain area is a ring of villages and one of the few true homes for the Yezidi people. The Yezidi’s ancient faith, which combines elements of Christianity, Sufi Islam, and Zoroastrianism, is considered heretical by ISIS and puts them at great risk. Of the 300,000 who live in this district, most have left in the last 24 hours and the rest are desperately trying to find a way out with aid organizations in Iraq saying that a humanitarian disaster of epic scale is currently unfolding.

The fall of Sinjar is made worse by the fact that it had been the refuge point for thousands of Yezidis, Shabak, and Shia—who are in the minority in northern Iraq—and others who fled the fall of Tal Afar and Mosul in June.

Shock and Terror: Islamic State Boasts Mass Executions in Iraq — ISIS Presses Campaign of Hatred and Mass Murder (Warning Graphic)

As part of their psychological war to create a medieval-style caliphate, the Islamic State has released a new shocking video showing scenes of mass executions, warning Iraqi soldiers and others who dare to resist that they will be rounded up and killed.

The Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL, stormed through areas of northern Iraq last month, building on territory they had already seized in western Iraq and Syria.

The 36-minute video clip was released for the Eid holiday marking the end of Ramadan, sheds a disturbing light on the mentality of the Islamic State extremists and the methods they use as the organization presses on with its campaign of hatred and murder.

The video begins with IS fighters sweeping through a town in quick hit raids. The insurgents then stand over dozens of terrified Iraqis many of whom are only teenagers. One militant mocks a soldier for wearing civilian clothes over his uniform and then shoots him dead.

Other soldiers are then led to a pit in the desert and murdered one by one. A jihadist, not satisfied that they are dead, then does the round again. Most of the men appear to be deserters from the Iraqi army.

Other sequences from the IS propaganda video include a commander firing up militants with promises that paradise awaits them, when they take the city of Samarra, which is only 100 km north of the capital Baghdad.

Some of the prisoners were led to the edge of a river where each one was shot in the head with a pistol and then shoved in.

The footage also shows the insurgents moving into a town in pick-up trucks and US Humvees, seized from the Iraqi army last month, although it is not clear if this actually is Samarra, which is still reportedly in Iraqi government hands.

Jihadists in the northern Syrian province of Raqa have accused a woman of adultery and stoned her to death, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday.

It was the first "execution" of its kind by the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria, which has proclaimed the establishment of an Islamic "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq.

"The Islamic State carried out its first sentence of death by stoning against a woman in Tabaqa, accusing her of adultery," said the Britain-based Observatory, referring to a town in Raqa province, most of which is under IS control.

An activist in the province confirmed the report, and said the stoning took place in a public square in the Tabaqa market area on Thursday evening.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (Isis) has become the richest terror group ever after looting 500 billion Iraqi dinars - the equivalent of $429m (£256m) - from Mosul's central bank, according to the regional governor.

Nineveh governor Atheel al-Nujaifi confirmed Kurdish televison reports that Isis militants had stolen millions from numerous banks across Mosul. A large quantity of gold bullion is also believed to have been stolen.

Following the siege of the country's second city, the bounty collected by the group has left it richer than al-Qaeda itself and as wealthy as small nations such as Tonga, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and the Falkland Islands.

The financial assets that Isis now possess are likely to worsen the Iraqi governement's struggle to defeat the insurgency, which is aimed at creating an Islamic state across the Syrian-Iraqi border.

From Aleppo in northern Syria almost to the Iraqi-Iranian border, the jihadists of Isis and sundry other groupuscules paid by the Saudi Wahhabis – and by Kuwaiti oligarchs – now rule thousands of square miles.

Apart from Saudi Arabia’s role in this catastrophe, what other stories are to be hidden from us in the coming days and weeks?

The story of Iraq and the story of Syria are the same – politically, militarily and journalistically: two leaders, one Shia, the other Alawite, fighting for the existence of their regimes against the power of a growing Sunni Muslim international army.

While the Americans support the wretched Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his elected Shia government in Iraq, the same Americans still demand the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad of Syria and his regime, even though both leaders are now brothers-in-arms against the victors of Mosul and Tikrit.
