Woman Video Taped Being Kidnapped Off Street Found Alive — Her Kidnapper Is In Custody (Video)

A Philadelphia woman whose shocking abduction was caught on tape was found alive Wednesday as her suspected kidnapper is in police custody, according to authorities.

22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither was found in Jessup, Maryland, with minor injuries Wednesday night, Philadelphia authorities said.

Delven Barnes, 37, was taken into custody in Maryland and will be charged, police said. He is currently being held on a warrant for a previous "violent" case, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

"He's a thug and this is what thugs do," Ramsey said. "Hopefully, he'll be in jail for the rest of his life. That's the only thing he deserves."

On Sunday, November 2, 2014, at approximately 9:40 PM, Police responded to the 100 block of West Coulter Street for a report of an abduction. A witness was located and stated that he observed a female, identified as the complainant, Carlesha Freeland-Gaither, yelling for help, and being forced into a 4-door vehicle, possibly a grey colored Ford Taurus. As the complainant was being forced into the vehicle the complainant’s glasses and cell phone were dropped onto the highway. Just before the vehicle pulled off the driver and passenger side rear windows were broken out by the complainant.

Complainant: Carlesha Freeland-Gaither 22 year old black female from the 100 block of W Hansberry Street.

• Suspect Description: Unknown black male, 5’10″, medium-heavy build, 25-30 years-of-age, medium brown complexion, wearing a dark colored jacket with a dark colored hood possibly a hooded sweatshirt underneath, dark colored hat, and dark colored pants.
  
• Vehicle Description: 2000-2002 dark gray metallic 4-door Ford Taurus with an unknown PA license, an unknown plate on the front bumper, rear spoiler, and both driver and passenger side rear windows broken out. Vehicle is missing inspection stickers and has an unknown item in the center bottom of the front windshield.

Nigeria's Kidnapped Girls: 63 Escape Abductors - But Over 200 Remain With Another Group of Kidnappers

More than 60 Nigerian girls and women abducted by Islamic extremists two weeks ago have managed to escape, officials said Monday, though more than 200 girls who were kidnapped in April remain missing.

Nigerian security forces and federal government officials had denied reports of the mass abduction from three villages in the northeast state of Borno on June 22.

Chibok local government chairman Pogu Bitrus said Monday he had verified that about 60 women and girls escaped on Thursday and Friday by sending a representative who met with some of the escapees and their families at the hospital in Lassa, a town in the neighboring Damboa local government area.

Vigilante leader Abbas Gava in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, said Sunday that vigilantes in the area told him 63 women and girls escaped Friday while their captors were engaged in a major attack on a military barracks and police headquarters in Damboa town.

Islamic extremists blew up a bridge, killed an unknown number of people and abducted the wife and two children of a retired police officer in northeast Nigeria, residents said Saturday amid mounting condemnation by Muslims of the Nigerian terrorist network that abducted more than 300 schoolgirls nearly a month ago.

News of Friday night's attack came as international efforts to help rescue the 276 missing girls got under way.

A team of French experts arrived Saturday in Nigeria, said an official in President Francois Hollande's office in Paris. He said they are expert in collecting intelligence from technical and human sources and in image analysis.
British security experts arrived Friday to join Nigerian and American forces, and Britain said its aim is not only to help in the crisis over the girls but to defeat Nigeria's homegrown Boko Haram terrorist network.

International outrage at the prolonged failure of Nigeria's military to rescue the girls was joined Saturday by U.S. first lady Michelle Obama. Nigerian Parents ID Kidnapped Daughters on Boko Haram Video

The father of one of the nearly 300 schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria says he recognized his daughter in a video released by militant group Boko Haram.

The man, whose first name is Shettima, told VOA's Hausa Service Tuesday that he spotted his 18-year-old daughter in the video and believes he also recognized a neighbor's daughter.

The man, who is a resident of Chibok, the northeasern Nigerian village where the girls were kidnapped, said he did not want his last name nor his daughter's name publicly released for safety reasons.

The development comes after the mother of another kidnapped schoolgirl identified her daughter in the same video.

Dumoma Mpur, the parent-teachers association chairman at Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok told Reuters the woman watched the video on television  Monday evening and spotted her daughter among the girls sitting on the ground and wearing veils.

"The video got parents apprehensive again after watching it  but the various steps taken by the governments and the coming of the foreign troops is boosting our spirit, even though I have not seen the any one soldier in Chibok yet,'' Mpur told Reuters by telephone.

The kidnappers pulled up in a pickup truck outside the Taj barbershop in an upscale neighborhood here in the Yemeni capital. One held an AK-47 assault rifle and the other carried a stun gun. As the men went inside, nearby shopkeepers heard shots.

Then a foreigner — tall, with the physique of a body builder, and holding a black gun — was seen standing over one of the mortally wounded attackers in the doorway of the barbershop, witnesses said. The foreigner kicked an automatic weapon out of the man’s hands, looked right and left down the street, jumped into a nearby sport utility vehicle and drove away.

Those new details emerged Saturday about a shooting last month in which the Obama administration said two Americans from the United States Embassy killed two armed Yemenis who were trying to kidnap them from the barbershop.

While much about the encounter remains unclear, a Yemeni official said Saturday that the two Yemeni assailants were part of a cell linked to Al Qaeda that had planned and executed several attacks on foreigners in the country. Whether by design or chance, the official said, the Americans had apparently disrupted a kidnapping ring that government officials blame for killing a Frenchman last week, kidnapping a Dutch couple last year, trying to assassinate a German diplomat last month, and attacking the central prison here in February, freeing 19 inmates.

Nigerian authorities failed to act on warnings about Boko Haram’s imminent raid on a boarding school where it abducted more than 240 girls last month, according to Amnesty international.

The London-based human rights group, after verifying the information with “credible sources,” said Nigerian security forces knew of the attack four hours before Boko Haram struck.

“The fact that Nigerian security forces knew about Boko Haram’s impending raid, but failed to take the immediate action needed to stop it, will only amplify the national and international outcry at this horrific crime,” Netsanet Belay, Amnesty International’s Africa director, research and advocacy, said today in a statement.


“It amounts to a gross dereliction of Nigeria’s duty to protect civilians, who remain sitting ducks for such attacks. The Nigerian leadership must now use all lawful means at their disposal to secure the girls’ safe release and ensure nothing like this can happen again.”

Among the locals who sounded the alarm, civilian patrols set up by the military in a neighboring village triggered a chain of phone calls the evening of April 14 after they noticed unidentified armed men on motorbikes heading toward Chibok, where the schoolgirls were later abducted, according to sources Amnesty International has interviewed.

Delhi Police on Wednesday night arrested two persons for allegedly robbing and gang-raping a 51-year-old Danish tourist who had apparently lost her way near the New Delhi Railway Station on Tuesday.

The arrested persons have been identified as Mahender alias Ganja, 25, and Mohammad Tahir alias Raja — both small-time criminals. The police recovered the woman’s iPod and a Nokia mobile phone worth $19 supposedly purchased by Ganja using her money. Her spectacle case and $16 cash was found on Raja.

A police officer associated with the investigation said the first breakthrough came after the woman identified two of the accused from the dossier of criminals that was shown to her. These criminals have earlier been arrested by the central district police for minor crimes.
