Is America's 'Deep State' Prepping Armed White Militias for Use as Death Squads Against Minorities and White Progressives?

The US Government Destroyed the Black Panthers

The US Government Destroyed the Black Panthers
During the late sixties and early seventies, Black Panthers brandished weapons publicly. State legislatures responded
by banning the public display of guns and the U.S. government launched a nation-wide attack on the Black Panthers
which included mass infiltration, violent raids on Panther meeting places, assassinations, and imprisonment of Panther leaders through the use of agent provocateurs, frame-ups and trumped up charges. The Black Panther Party was
eventually destroyed.

The U.S. Government Destroyed the Symbionese Liberation Army

The U.S. Government Destroyed the Symbionese Liberation Army
On May 17, 1974, police caught up with the notorious kidnappers of Patty Hearst, heiress of the Hearst media empire.
The Symbionese Liberation Army, as they called themselves, was a small group of leftists, both black and white, who carried out killings and bank robberies to fund their "revolution." Patty Hearst "joined" the organization, and the core
group of the organization was eventually tracked down by law enforcement and trapped in a small house in Compton,
CA. It was perhaps the first time law enforcement applied the "corner them and burn them alive" tactic. Six members
of the organization were killed, Patty Hearst was not among them. Other members went underground. Patty Hearst eventually surfaced, spent some time in jail and went back to the life of an heiress. The Symbionese Liberation Army
was destroyed.

The U.S. Government Destroyed the MOVE Organization

The U.S. Government Destroyed the MOVE Organization
On May 13, 1985, the MOVE organization was attacked by law enforcement at the home they called their base in Philadelphia, PA. Their crime was playing loud music and using bullhorns to scream out their political message. The
organization was mostly black but had white members and advocated a "back to nature" philosophy.  The organization
has been labeled a cult. Again, the "corner them and burn them alive" tactic was applied by law enforcement. A bomb
was dropped on the home from a helicopter and it started a fire. Members were shot at when they tried to leave the
burning building. By the time it was all over, a few members survived but 11 adults and children were shot dead and or
burned alive. Law enforcement decided to punish the entire community by allowing the fire to spread to 60 nearby
homes. No attempt was made to put out the fire. The MOVE organization was destroyed.

The U.S. Government Destroyed the Branch Davidians

The U.S. Government Destroyed the Branch Davidians
The so-called "Branch Davidians" were based in Waco, TX.  It was considered a splinter group of the The Seventh
Day Adventists and was led by David Koresh. Based on reports of child sex abuse and illegal firearms, the ATF
(Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) attempted to raid the organization's compound in Waco and
was met with a barrage of gunfire. The raid failed and a 51-day siege of the compound and its members ensued.
Members of the organization (which included men, women, and children of various ethnic groups and races) were
subjected to 24-hours of loud music, tear gas, water cannon, etc. Instead of simply waiting them out, law enforcement
(which included the FBI) decided to apply the "burn them all alive" tactic again. A total of 76 men, women, and
children were killed and there were reports of members who tried to escape being shot at by law enforcement. The
organization was destroyed.

The U.S. Government Used 'Militias' to Destroy Leftists Organizations and Peasant-Based Social Movements Throughout South America

The U.S. Government Destroyed Leftists Organizations and Peasant-Based Social Movements Throughout South America
Starting in the late 1970's the U.S. government organized so-called "death squads" (which they called militias)
throughout South America. These militias were used against radical leftists, peasant social movements, and
innocent civilians who were considered "possibly disloyal." These mass murder operations were greatly expanded
during the Reagan Administration and came to known as "The Dirty Wars." The South American dictators and their
US-based operators pretended that the "militias" were "independent" and "privately organized" and were therefore
"out of their control." Tens of thousands of activists were murdered including an untold number of innocent civilians.
An estimated 35,000 were killed in El Salvador alone.

Armed White Supremacist "Militias" in the United States Threaten Government
and Local Police Yet Go Untouched by Law Enforcement.
Why?

Armed white supremacist "militias" in the United States Go Untouched by Law Enforcement.
America's "Militias" are armed to the teeth and backed by a wide range of new laws that say they can go almost
anywhere (bars, church, department stores, on the street, etc.) while brandishing their guns publicly. Why are right-wing
organizations (fronted by Republican politicians) pushing "walk around with assault rifles" and "stand your ground"
laws? Why are armed white supremacist organizations allowed to flourish untouched? Where are the agent provocateurs, assassinations, set-ups, and armed raids that organizations like the Black Panthers, SLA, MOVE, and the Branch
Davidians were subject to? As we speak, the FBI and local police are engaged in mass infiltration of Islamic American
organizations and nation-wide entrapment operations against Muslim Americans - but armed and violent white
supremacists are untouched?  What is America's "Deep State" preparing for?

The White Right’s Impunity

By Glen Ford, Black Agenda Report

If a thousand armed Blacks had gathered in one place, pointing rifles at federal officers, and two of them later cold-bloodedly assassinated policemen, the federal response would touch every Black neighborhood in America. But the armed white Right gets a pass. Racists are resources to those in power. “The national security state’s legitimacy is based on (white) mass fear and loathing of the Other.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) keeps a running tab of armed rightwing domestic “plots and conspiracies” since April, 1995, when Timothy McVeigh and his associates blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. The attack soiled the reputations of grassroots fascists throughout the American “heartland” and prompted the U.S. Justice Department to announce formation of a “special unit” to, ostensibly, track and disrupt rightwing militants. Over the next several years, the feds busted a number of individuals involved in armed operations. Press coverage revealed that the racist “underground” functions largely in plain view, and that government operatives are all but a permanent presence in their ranks (just as FBI informant Gary Rowe was in the Ku Klux Klan car – and maybe on the trigger – when civil rights volunteer Viola Liuzzo was murdered on an Alabama highway in 1965). The whole pretense came to a halt on the morning of September 11, 2001, when the last scheduled meeting of the Justice Department unit was cancelled, for obvious reasons.

In 2009, Department of Homeland Security analyst Darryl Johnson wrote a report urging his superiors to pay more attention to “rightwing extremism.” At the time, DHS assigned eight people to track “non-Islamic” domestic extremism. Johnson thought the job required 12 people. Instead, his unit was dismantled by Obama’s newly-appointed DHS secretary Janet Napolitano, with only one analyst remaining, according to Salon.com.

The unit was ‘revived’ just two weeks ago, part of Attorney General Eric Holder’s flurry of cosmetic Obama legacy-building initiatives. Holder’s announcement was vaguely worded, so as not to create a firestorm on the Right. The unit would go after “'lone wolf'-style actors aimed to harm our nation,'' and would focus on anti-government plots and racist violence. Days later, husband and wife Jerad and Amanda Miller, who earlier this year had been among an army of fascists gathered in defense of racist rancher Cliven Bundy, shot two Las Vegas cops in the head and killed a bystander at a Wal-Mart. After declaring, “This is the start of a revolution,” they committed suicide.

“The FBI’s war has always been against Blacks, radicals, and now Muslims.”

Southern Poverty Law Center senior fellow Mark Potok told Democracy Now! he thinks “the movement is at least a bit on fire at the moment” – meaning, the armed, racist Right is on a roll. In thousands of churches, barber shops and hair salons, African Americans wonder aloud if the Black President and his Black top law enforcement officer are going to crack down on the neo-Klan uprising.
The answer, of course, is No, not a chance. The FBI’s war has always been against Blacks, radicals, and now Muslims – ideally, Black Muslims. The national security state’s legitimacy is based on (white) mass fear and loathing of the Other, in whose pursuit all civil liberties are extraneous. Such dark energies are not conjured out of thin air, but mined from the deep reservoirs of America’s racial history. Hate sits like a thermal resource to be tapped and redirected at the whim of those in power. The U.S. national security state needs the ferocious hatreds of the Bundys and Millers – and the McVeighs – to sustain a planetary War-Against-All, a war that, on its own premises, must end with annihilation of the Other.
Who do you think is manning Obama’s Killer Elite Special Ops legions in Asia and Africa? What kind of domestic law and order troops will be necessary to contain a largely Black and brown America to which the rulers offer absolutely nothing, but who must be made the scapegoats for social collapse?

That’s why the FBI puts a bounty on the head of sister Assata Shakur, living peacefully in Cuba, while allowing white racists to point high-powered rifles at the heads of federal officers in rural Nevada. Two of those fascists later put bullets in the brains of policemen in Las Vegas, but there will be no general crackdown on the Millers’ comrades in arms, no assassinations of Cliven Bundys in their sleep, no great Gulag of lifetime solitary confinement for white militiamen.

The Empire needs them. It always has.

Al Sharpton Was Accused of Trying To Lead the FBI To Exiled Activist Assata Shakur — Shakur Was Recently Placed on the FBI's 'Most Wanted Terrorist' List

Did Al Sharpton try to trap Assata Shakur for the FBI? -
The Facts As We Know Them

1) Al Sharpton was an informant for the FBI, which Sharpton has admitted.
2) HBO has claimed Sharpton was pressured to inform after FBI surveillance suggested Sharpton's willingness to get involved in drug trafficking (likely an FBI COINTELPRO-type entrapment operation targeted at Sharpton - "The Activist").
3) There is video of Al Sharpton discussing drug trafficking with an undercover FBI agent. If Sharpton was working for the FBI at the time, why would the FBI have an FBI agent discussing a drug deal with Sharpton - other than to entrap Sharpton into working for the FBI (see video above).
3) Both the FBI and Sharpton say Sharpton informed on members of the mafia.
4) Sharpton says he informed on the the mafia to stop drug trafficking in the black community, not because he was recorded doing drug deals and was forced to do it by the FBI.
5) At the time the FBI was using Sharpton to inform on the mafia, Sharpton was a "community activist" who was coordinating his activities with many protest movements (The December 12 Movement, The Patrice Lumumba Coalition, Sharpton's own National Action Network, etc.) engaged in protests over numerous violent racial incidents (Howard Beach, Bernhard Geotz, Bensonhurst, The Korean Store Boycott, Tawana Brawley).
6) Some activists in New York City have always been suspicious that Al Sharpton was an "informant" and these suspicions were confirmed during the 1980's with the revelations that Sharpton had in fact informed for law enforcement and installed a law enforcement wiretap on his home phone (which many of these activists had called).
7) Sharpton and the FBI claim he did not inform on community activists.
8) At the same time Assata Shakur (aka Joan Chesimard) was (and still is) one of the FBI's "Most Wanted" having been accused and tried for killing a police officer and having escaped from captivity to a celebrated exile in Cuba. Shakur was recently placed on the FBI's most wanted "terrorist" list.
9) Particular activists claim Al Sharpton was attempting to get in communication with Assata Shakur at the time he was working with the FBI - perhaps to set "a trap" at the request of the FBI. The activist cite a number of meetings with Al Sharpton for the purpose of Sharpton getting in contact with Shakur.
10) Newday cites "a source" within law enforcement with "knowledge" of Sharpton's work for the FBI. This source says one of Sharpton's "assignments" was a trap for Shakur.
11) Newsday cites a FBI official on the record who says Sharpton was not used to trap Shakur.
12) Sharpton claims he never attempted to get in contact with Assata Shakur, and was never involved in setting a trap for her.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has worked as a federal informant, tried to set up a meeting with black fugitive radical [Assata Shakur, AKA] JoAnne Chesimard in 1983, according to activists who said they were approached by Sharpton.

The black activists said they feared Sharpton was trying to deliver [Shakur] into the arms of federal agents, but said they had no proof.

One law-enforcement source, who declined to be identified but has detailed knowledge of Sharpton’s activities as an FBI informant, said this week that Sharpton was working as an informant at the time he sought to meet [Shakur]. The source said that one of Sharpton’s assignments was to try to lead agents to [Shakur], who escaped from prison in 1979 after being convicted in the killing a New Jersey state trooper.

“It wasn’t a big massive operation. It was just a small shot, an everyday deal,” the source said. “I would equate it with setting up 10 traps a day trying to catch a fox . . .” He said Sharpton was not a major participant in the search for the woman, who goes by the African name Assata Shakur.

A top FBI official said that Sharpton was not used in any manner to lure Shakur into a trap. “This is the first I’m hearing of it, it’s bull———,” FBI Assistant Deputy Director Kenneth Walton, who led the Shakur investigation, said earlier this week.

Sharpton flatly denied trying to make contact with Shakur.

Newsday reported in January that beginning in 1983 Sharpton secretly supplied federal law enforcement agencies with information on boxing promoter Don King, reputed organized crime figures and black leaders and elected officials. And in a two-hour interview, Sharpton admitted to Newsday that he had assisted the government in drug and organized crime cases. He said he also accompanied undercover federal agents wearing body recorders to meetings with various subjects of federal investigations. He said he had allowed the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York to install a tapped telephone in his Brooklyn home.

Sharpton has insisted he never turned over information on black radicals or on King.

This week, Sharpton denied assertions by Ahmed Obafemi, a long-time activist, and Kwame Brathwaite***, an activist and photographer who says Sharpton asked him to set up an encounter with Obafemi. Both men say that Obafemi acted as the intermediary in the failed discussions with Sharpton to reach Shakur.

Sharpton called the men “liars” and said they were possibly “police agents.” He charged they are part of “an element in the black community that has lost out . . . and that will fabricate any story out of jealousy because they have no following . . . ”

Obafemi, the national organizer for the New Afrikan People’s Organization, said Sharpton met with him in Manhattan at least four times in 1983, over a period of about two months. He said that Sharpton offered to donate money to help black revolutionaries running from the law and that Sharpton was particularly interested in setting up a meeting with Shakur, once referred to as the “soul” of the Black Liberation Army.

Sharpton told Obafemi he was representing two former Black Panthers, who wanted to see Shakur, according to Obafemi.

The ex-Panthers were supposedly trying to make useful contacts in case they had to flee the country someday, Obafemi said he was told.

“The first discussion was that they were close to her, that they had been in the [Black Panther] party with her and that they wanted to talk to her,” Obafemi said. “I wanted to find out who they were, but he said they really didn’t want to be known.”

Shakur was once a member of the Black Panther Party, but went underground around 1971 because she said she believed the group was being infiltrated by city and federal law enforcement officers.

The 1983 deal fell through at a final meeting when Sharpton insisted that money would be donated only if the two former Panthers could meet Shakur. Failing that, Obafemi said, Sharpton was interested in making any kind of “contact” with her or with any of her close associates also on the run from the law. “Naturally, I never got back” to him, said Obafemi, whose organization believes that blacks should have their own country within the United States and that they have the right to fight for it.

“Obviously we had to feel that a definite possibility existed he was working for the government, and we would have felt that way about him or anybody else who approached us in that manner,” said Chokwe Lumumba, an attorney and chairman of the New Afrikan People’s Organization.

Lumumba had been informed in 1983 by Obafemi about Sharpton’s proposal. The attorney said his organization was more interested in getting information about Sharpton’s motives than in receiving money from him. “I can’t say that we were able to make any definite conclusions” about whether Sharpton was acting as an agent for the government, Lumumba said.

Both Lumumba and Obafemi denied knowing where Shakur was at the time.

Sharpton’s first broached his interest in Shakur during a chance encounter with Brathwaite, a black nationalist, Brathwaite said. Brathwaite said he happened to run into Sharpton one day in midtown but he could not remember the month. Already acquainted with each other from entertainment circles, the two men started talking and Sharpton “said he wanted to make a donation to Assata,” Brathwaite said.

A day or two later, Brathwaite told Obafemi of the offer. “I told him to watch out,” said Brathwaite. “I knew that authorities were trying to find out where she [Assata Shakur] was and that they were trying to get close to somebody who was close to her . . . And then I just knew that he’s always been a hustler.”

Last year, Newsday disclosed that Shakur was given political asylum in Cuba and was living there with her daughter, now 14 years old. She is probably the most sought-after of the 1970s radicals linked to bank robberies and police killings over a 10-year span.

The specific amount of the contribution Sharpton said he was prepared to make in 1983 on behalf of the ex-Panthers was not discussed, Obafemi said; but Sharpton said the prospective contributors gained the money by “ripping off the system,” Obafemi recalled.

He said that at least two of the meetings occurred in a luxurious apartment at 30 Lincoln Plaza, near Lincoln Center. That was the building where, according to a law enforcement source and a report published in the Feb. 2, 1988 edition of The Village Voice, a federal agent using the name Victor Quintana set up an apartment in 1983 or earlier to lure boxing world denizens suspected of illegal activity. Quintana in that year ensnared Sharpton into working for the FBI, New York Newsday reported in January.

The Village Voice article reported that apartment was on the 29th floor, but Obafemi could not recall the floor on which he had his rendezvous with Sharpton. Sharpton lives in Brooklyn and Obafemi said he did not explain why Sharpton had access to the apartment. “He made me think it was his,” said Obafemi. “I was saying (to myself), ’What kind of money must they have to have a spot in here.’ He had the keys and everything.”

Sharpton denied this week ever being in the building.

Obafemi said that up until 1983 he knew Sharpton only as the head of a youth organization, the National Youth Movement, and as someone with vague connections in the entertainment world.

Obafemi is the ex-husband of Nehanda Obafemi, once known as Cheri Laverne Dalton, who is still wanted by the federal government in connection with the notorious Brink’s robbery which took place seven years ago yesterday. She is allegedly connected to the group of black and white revolutionaries convicted in the Brink’s heist. A guard and two police officers were killed in that incident, which took place upstate near Nyack.

In 1983, Obafemi was busy trying to gain support in the black community for the people arrested in the Brink’s case. In October of that year, several blacks and whites were convicted in that robbery and in the highly planned breakout of Shakur from prison in 1979.

The law enforcement source implicating Sharpton in the hunt for Assata Shakur said that Sharpton was also, secondarily, trying to help agents get other fugitives, especially Mutulu Shakur, who was still on the run at that time. Mutulu Shakur, no relation to Assata, was later apprehended and convicted in connection with the Brink’s robbery and the escape of Assata Shakur.

Robert E. Kessler contributed to this story.

***Brathwaite is the brother of Elombe Brath, an official of a black nationalist organization called the Patrice Lumumba Coalition. Brath and several associates have been opposed to Sharpton because of his FBI ties.
