he daughter of a militia member was shot and wounded Sunday after a local meeting of the III% Idaho group.

The 12-year-old girl, whose name was not released, was taken by helicopter to a hospital for treatment after the shooting at the Rupert Gun Range, reported the Twin Falls Times-News.

Her mother said the girl was in stable condition Monday morning, and the shooting remains under investigation.

It’s not clear who was handling the weapon when it fired, wounding the girl.

Brandon Curtiss, the president of the state III% militia group, provided some details about the girl and the shooting in a Facebook post seeking donations for the wounded child’s family.

He said militia group members wanted to take target practice after a county meeting of the militia group — which was involved in last month’s armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

Curtiss said a militia member’s gun accidentally fired while clearing the weapon, and the bullet struck a metal table beneath a shelter and ricocheted.

The bullet struck the girl, who is the daughter of a militia group member, in the stomach and then exited her side.

Studies Show Fewer Gun Deaths in States With Strict Gun Laws

Do states with stricter gun laws have less gun violence than those with few restrictions?

Researchers who have studied the issue argue they generally do, but with some caveats. They cannot say whether the laws, or some other factors, are the reason for a lower rate of firearm deaths and that there are exceptions.

President Barack Obama addressed the matter in a news conference hours after a gunman killed eight students and a teacher at an Oregon community college.

"We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths," Obama said.

David Hemenway, director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, said Obama's claim was accurate and supported by many studies. The likely reason is that states with stronger gun laws have fewer guns and fewer suicides and homicides from them, he said.

The White House says Obama based his claim on a report published in August by the National Journal, which found that states with the fewest gun-related deaths — including homicides, suicides and accidents — had stricter laws than those with the highest number. The study looked at laws such as those that require permits to purchase handguns and universal background checks on sales.

A study published in 2013 in the Journal of the American Medical Association compared firearm deaths in states to the number of restrictive gun laws each state had out of 28 tracked by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Looking at 120,000 deaths over a four-year period, researchers concluded that a "higher number of firearm laws in a state are associated with a lower rate of firearm fatalities in the state, overall and for suicides and homicides individually." They acknowledged exceptions, with some states featuring loose restrictions but low rates of gun deaths. They also cautioned against drawing a cause-and-effect relationship, saying more research was needed.

Cops Want To Stop Crime — So California's Police Sue for Even More Firepower for Gun Owners?

Gun owners and California law enforcement officers have filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles, claiming its ban on high-capacity magazines violates existing state regulations.

Gun owners face a Nov. 18 deadline to give up magazines that contain more than 10 rounds of ammunition, after Los Angeles' City Council voted in July to ban ownership of the magazines, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

The lawsuit seeks to block that law going into effect.

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, one of 30 sheriffs who filed the lawsuit, said parts of the state allow high-capacity magazines.

“The ordinance creates a patchwork of laws that law-abiding citizens and law enforcement have to navigate through,” Bosenko said, according to Los Angeles Daily News.

The California Rifle, Pistol Association and the California Reserve Peace Officers Association have also joined the lawsuit.

With the passage of a new law earlier this year, North Dakota has become the first state to legalize law enforcement use of armed drones.

Though the law limits the type of weapons permitted to those of the "less than lethal" variety — weapons such as tear gas, rubber bullets, beanbags, pepper spray and Tasers — the original bill actually aimed to ensure that no weapons at all were allowed on law enforcement drones.

The sponsor of the original bill, Republican state Rep. Rick Becker, said he wasn't happy with how that part of the law turned out.

"In my opinion there should be a nice, red line: Drones should not be weaponized. Period," Becker said at a hearing in March, according to The Daily Beast.

Originally, the intent of the bill was to require police to obtain a search warrant before using a drone to look for evidence. It also prohibited weapons aboard drones.

But to get a measure passed that would require search warrants, Becker had to compromise on the weapons issue.

"More guns, less crime" - surely you've heard this mantra before? There's even an entire book devoted to it. As Emily Badger noted awhile back, it has become a staple of our national gun control debate: "The idea that more guns lead to less crime appears on gun policy 'fact sheets,' as evidence debunking gun control 'myths,' in congressional committee reports."

The notion stems from a paper published in 1997 by economists John Lott and David Mustard, who looked at county-level crime data from 1977 to 1992 and concluded that "allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons deters violent crimes and it appears to produce no increase in accidental deaths." Of course, the study of gun crime has advanced significantly since then (no thanks to Congress). Some researchers have gone so far as to call Lott and Mustard's original study "completely discredited."

One of the major critiques of the study came from the National Research Council, which in 2004 extended the data through the year 2000 and ultimately concluded that "with the current evidence it is not possible to determine that there is a causal link between the passage of right-to-carry laws and crime rates." Or in other words, "More guns, less crime? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

Now, Stanford law professor John Donohue and his colleagues have added another full decade to the analysis, extending it through 2010, and have concluded that the opposite of Lott and Mustard's original conclusion is true: more guns equal more crime.

A new group calling itself the Huey P. Newton Gun Club launched armed self-defense patrols Wednesday with one stated purpose: to protect Dallas neighbors from police.

Group leader Charles Goodson said recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri over the killing of an unarmed black teen named Michael Brown by a white police officer is only part of the reason for the new Dallas patrols.

The group is named after Huey P. Newton, a founder of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s who was killed by a rival militant in 1989.

"We don't think that what happened to Michael Brown in St. Louis is an isolated incident. We have so many Michael Browns here in the city of Dallas," Goodson said.

Another leader, Huby Freeman, said the group wants to educate neighbors about the right to bear arms and the need for it.

"We believe we can police ourselves and bring security to our community, ridding our community of black-on-black crime, violence, police terror, etc., etc.," Freeman said.

Freeman and more than two dozen other people, many carrying rifles, marched Wednesday afternoon along Martin Luther King Boulevard and Malcolm X Boulevard, streets named for civil rights leaders.

National Rifle Association Finally Embarrassed by Own Stupidity and Extremism: Removes Video That Promoted Gun Carrying by the Blind

The National Rifle Association has yanked a video posted to one of its websites this week that advocated for the right of blind people to carry guns.

The video, titled “Firearms and the Blind,” featured NRA commentator Dom Raso, who argued that a person doesn’t need to see to be able to fire a gun.

“Do you think you need to see where you’re shooting if someone is on top of you trying to kill or rape you, while their hands are slowly squeezing your neck and they're yelling ‘I’m going to kill you'? I didn't think so,” Raso said.

The video had been posted to YouTube as well as the NRA News website.

On Thursday afternoon, the YouTube video was gone, bearing only the message: "This video has been removed by the user." The page on the NRA News site where the video had appeared now showed the message: "404 Page Not Found."

An NRA spokesperson did not immediately respond to TPM's request for comment.

Just days after the Coeur d’Alene Tribe of American Indians canceled Ted Nugent's appearance at their casino in Idaho, the Puyallup Tribe in Washington announced they'd be canceling two of his concerts as well. Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy. Nugent hasn't seemed to figure out yet that you reap what you sow.

TACOMA, Wash. -- Emerald Queen Casino will cancel two Ted Nugent concerts that were scheduled August 2 and 3 over allegations of racist remarks by the singer.

Puyallup Tribe officials said the decision came after learning that Nugent has said racist remarks.

"The first amendment gives people the right free speech, but I think racism is intolerable and not acceptable here," said Puyallup Tribal Council Vice President Lawrence W. LaPointe. "We’ve been getting lots of complaints from the community and other organizations."

"I don’t want to take away his right to say what he wants to say, but we don’t need it here."

Gun Junkies Can Make Universities Ripe for Mass Murder — If They Win Suit to Let Guns in Campus Parking Lots

Students for Concealed Carry and another gun-rights group have filed a civil suit in state court against Ohio State University, alleging that the school’s anti-gun policy is so breathtaking in its scope that it is illegal under state law.

The gun-rights advocates say the policy bans students from carrying firearms when they aren’t even on Ohio State’s campus, reports Reason.

The plaintiffs concede that Ohio State bureaucrats can generally prevent students from possessing guns on campus. Their grievance is that university policy prohibits students from having guns when they are involved in official Ohio State-related activities that occur off campus. They say this rule is blatantly illegal.

School policy also prevents students from leaving guns in their locked cars. Such a policy is illegal, lawyers for Students for Concealed Carry argue, because state law specifically allows students to leave guns in their locked vehicles.

Gun nuts porting assault weapons to dinner from Chili’s to Chipotle. The leaders of the take-no-prisoners gun-rights organization have been witness to the logical outgrowth of its policies and rhetoric. Much as the GOP helped create the lunatic-fringe Tea Party within its midst, the NRA chieftains have helped birth a beast whose black heart now beats strongly among its most radical adherents.

The NRA’s officials purposefully pipeline propaganda to the most loony-tunes among us. They’ve told these gun cultists that they had best arm themselves with as many weapons and as lethal weaponry as they can get their hands on, because either a black president or a black helicopter will be hunting them down shortly. Simultaneously, they’ve used every electoral and lobbying tactic to best enable these unstable individuals to have access to the weaponry of war from which they and their arms-dealer cronies so handsomely profit.

The result: They’ve watched impotently as this witch’s brew of mental illness, far-right politics, propaganda, and heavy weaponry has led to one shocking—yet wholly predictable—massacre after another, with the most recent targets including the execution-style murders of two lunching police officers in Las Vegas. These very same factors have also provided the impetus for a group of lunkheads to share their passion for taking AK-47s to lunch—even though the rest of us have no interest in sharing their emotionally degraded worldview.

IDIOTS With Guns: Gun Junkies Want To Bring Their Guns Into Stores — Gun Found Among Toys in Target Store

The discovery of a gun left among toys at a Target store comes as retailers face pressure to prohibit customers from carrying guns into their stores.

The pictures are provocative: Gun-rights activists in Texas with rifles slung over their shoulders standing in the baby aisle of a Target store, with the company’s trademark red bull’s-eye in the background.

Then on Thursday, a police report revealed that an employee at the Myrtle Beach, N.C., Target store reported May 30 that he found a black handgun on top of a superhero toy box.

Authorities said the 9-mm handgun had not been reported stolen and had eight bullets inside. Officers said they would review security-camera footage to try to determine who left the gun in the store.

The discovery comes as Target and other retailers face pressure to prohibit customers from carrying guns into their stores. On Wednesday, the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America launched a petition asking the company to prevent customers from carrying firearms in Target stores.

The petition is unrelated to the discovery of the gun in South Carolina.

A Florida man is facing negligence charges after leaving his loaded AK-47 unattended, resulting in his 6-year-old nephew picking it up and accidentally shooting his grandfather.

According to WSVN, Juan Manuel Martinez Jr., 28, has been charged with culpable negligence of a firearm for not keeping an eye on his loaded AK-47, authorities said.

According to police, Martinez was having a beer with his father, Juan Manuel Martinez Sr., at a family barbeque when talk turned to hunting. Martinez Jr. brought out his AK-47 to share, handing it to his father who then set it on a table.

A nephew of Martinez Jr. picked up the unattended assault rifle and pulled the trigger, shooting his grandfather in the chest and killing him.

“It’s not his fault. He didn’t know what he was doing,” Martinez Jr. said. “He’s just a little boy. I love him. He’s my family. I love all my family.”

Martinez added that he was unaware that his nephew was nearby.

Frazier Glenn Miller, accused of killing three outside two Jewish Community Centers in Kansas the day before Passover, embodies many features of the extreme gun rights movement--notably its persecution fantasies and insurrectional hatred of the government. Miller, who founded the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, "knew enough of the law, enough of American history, enough of the thinking of the founders that he could craft this bastardized notion of liberty and this notion of states’ authority and states’ rights,” Michael L. Williams, Texas commissioner of education who investigated Miller when he was a federal prosecutor, told the New York Times.

States' rights like bills to nullify federal gun laws and to arrest and jail federal agents trying to enforce them and a murderous hatred of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF) are prominent features of the gun rights movement.

Miller has written that the white race is “drowning literally in seas of colored mongrels” a remark that is disturbing close to longtime NRA Board Member Ted Nugent's depiction of President Obama as a "sub-human mongrel." Nugent retracted the remark--kind of.

The NRA supported Ronald Reagan when, as California governor, he led new gun laws to keep Black Panthers and other black power activists from having firearms. In promoting the Mulford Act which he signed in 1967, President Regan said “There’s no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons.” What a difference a few decades--and the change in color of the carrying citizens--makes. Many say gun laws would change overnight if the "law-abiding citizens standing their ground" were African-Americans and not George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn (the "loud music" killer).

This is hardly the first anti-Semitic gun attack in the US. In 1998 former Aryan Nations guard Buford O’Neal Furrow Jr. fired more than 70 rounds from a submachine gun at a Jewish community center in Los Angeles. In 1999, in Skokie and Rogers Park, white supremacist Benjamin Nathaniel Smith went on a racist shooting rampage killing Northwestern University Men's Basketball Coach Ricky Byrdsong and Won-Joon Yoon, a computer science doctoral student. He also wounded nine Orthodox Jews and an African-American minister. Smith was issued a gun owner's ID card despite an order of protection filed by an ex-girlfriend. The hate spree spawned a yearly event called the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate.

Wade Michael Page, who fatally shot six people and wounded four others at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin in 2012, was another white supremacist. Page was reportedly a member of the Hammerskins and played in neo-Nazi bands. He founded the band End Apathy in 2005 and played in the band Definite Hate, both considered racist white-power bands by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Southern Poverty Law Center monitors such hate groups which are some of the nation's biggest gun advocates, preaching insurrection and stockpiling weapons.

Mark Twain once famously said, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” Twain wasn’t praising lies with this comment, of course, but modern-day conservatives seem to think he was dishing out advice instead of damning the practice of dishonesty. Conservatives have figured out a neat little rhetorical trick: One lie is easy for your opponents to debunk. Tell one lie after another, however, and your opponent’s debunkings will never catch up. By the time the liberal opposition has debunked one lie, there’s a dozen more to take its place.

Science educator Eugenie Scott deemed the technique the “Gish Gallop,” named for a notoriously sleazy creationist named Duane Gish. The Urban Dictionary defines the Gish Gallop as a technique that “involves spewing so much bullshit in such a short span on that your opponent can’t address let alone counter all of it.” Often users of the Gish Gallop know their arguments are nonsense or made in bad faith, but don’t particularly care because they are so dead set on advancing their agenda. Unfortunately, the strategy is so effective that it’s been expanding rapidly in right-wing circles. Here are just a few of the most disturbing examples of the Gish Gallop in action.

1. Creationism. It’s no surprise creationists inspired the coining of the term Gish Gallop, as they have perfected the art of making up nonsense faster than scientists can refute it. The list of false or irrelevant claims made by creationists, as chronicled by Talk Origins, numbers in the dozens, perhaps even hundreds, and more are always being spun out. Trying to argue with a creationist, therefore, turns into a hellish game of Whack-A-Mole. Debunk the lie that the speed of light is not constant, and you’ll find he’s already arguing that humans co-existed with dinosaurs. Argue that it’s unconstitutional to put the story of Adam and Eve in the science classroom, and find he’s pretending he was never asking for that and instead wants to “teach the controversy.”

“Teaching the controversy" is a classic Gish Gallop apology. The conservative wants to make it seem like he’s supporting open-minded debate, but instead he just wants an opportunity to dump a bunch of lies on students with the knowledge that they’ll never have the time and attention to carefully parse every debunking.

2. Climate change denialism. This strategy worked so well for creationism it makes perfect sense that it would be imported to the world of climate change denialism. Climate change denialists have many changing excuses for why they reject the science showing that human-caused greenhouse gases are changing the climate, but what all these reasons have in common is they are utter nonsense in service of a predetermined opposition to taking any action to prevent further damage.

Democratic leaders in the Senate have begun surveying senators to determine whether there is enough support to save the troubled nomination. Few Republicans are expected to back Murthy, and as many as eight Democrats also could be opposed.

Chuck Michel, one of the National Rifle Association's top lawyers, urged California NRA members not to cooperate with police if their guns turn up at crime scenes, warning that prosecutors would use a non-existent California law to engage in malicious prosecution against gun owners.

A recipient of the NRA's 2013 Defender of Justice Award and representative of the NRA in California, Michel appeared on the January 28 edition of NRA News show Cam & Company to criticize California's Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS). APPS is a unique crime fighting tool aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of people who, because of their criminal record or mental health issues, are banned by law from owning them. The system cross references California's gun ownership databases with databases of individuals prohibited from owning a gun in order to identify gun owners who are no longer allowed to own their weapons, who are then instructed to turn in their firearms.
