When examining a crime experienced investigators always ask the same questions: Who had the motive, who had the means, and who had the opportunity. The city manager, a judge, and the police chief resigned, and police officers have been fired in the wake of a scathing Justice Department report about racism in the Ferguson police department. Therefore, protesters were winning on the issue of racism in Ferguson. So who stood to gain by changing the subject from "racist policing" to "police officers are victims"? Meanwhile, CNN has referred to the shooter as an "expert." The police officers were shot by a handgun from over 100 yards away.—Ronald David Jackson

Two police officers suffered "very serious" wounds after being shot early Thursday during a demonstration in Ferguson, Missouri, authorities said.
Videos appear to show shooting of cops in Ferguson
Gunfire rang out as about 50 protesters and about 30 police officers remained outside the Ferguson Police Department shortly after midnight local time (1 a.m. ET) at a dwindling rally following the resignation of the embattled force's chief.
St. Louis County Police Chief John Belmar said that it appeared that at least three shots were "directed exactly at" the officers.
