Robotics company Boston Dynamics released a new video showcasing its upgraded Atlas robot, and the footage features a slew of impressive (and somewhat unsettling) new capabilities.

The humanoid Atlas robot, which has been overhauled with a sleeker design, can be seen at the beginning of the video walking around untethered before it opens the front door to Boston Dynamics' office and steps outside. The bot is then seen walking on uneven and snowy terrain, maneuvering around trees and correcting its balance several times.The new-and-improved robot is "designed to operate outdoors and inside buildings," Boston Dynamics wrote in a description of the video posted on YouTube. "It is specialized for mobile manipulation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate objects."



Indeed, the video goes on to show Atlas bending down to pick up 10-pound (4.5 kilograms) boxes and pivoting its torso to place each package on a shelf. In another instance, a human handler uses a hockey stick to push Atlas off balance. The robot stumbles backwards (but catches itself) before regaining its balance. Next, an employee pushes Atlas down from behind. The curled-up robot (lying flat on its robotic face) is able to push itself up -- first to its "hands" and "knees," before righting its torso and then pushing up on its feet-- all without help from a human or a tether.

Some commenters on the YouTube video expressed outrage at the guy pushing the robot with a hockey stick, with some saying they felt sad for the robot, some calling the guy a bully and even suggesting, perhaps with a grin, that he will be blamed for any robot uprisings.

"The guy who kicks the robot will be fully responsible [sic] from the forthcoming robot-human wars," wrote Alper ALT.

In video posted to YouTube, Japanese robot-maker Suidobashi Heavy Industry accepted U.S. rival MegaBots' duel, paving the way for a future "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots"-style matchup.


MegaBots co-founders Matt Oehrlein and Gui Cavalcant threw down the robotic gauntlet in their own all-caps American video on June 30. The two men were draped in the red, white and blue flags of their homeland and dark "Top Gun"-style aviator sunglasses as they issued the challenge.

"We have a giant robot, you have a giant robot -- you know what needs to happen. We challenge you to a duel," Oehrlein says in the clip.

Departments across the country, already involved in a hyper-militarized frenzy, may soon have another disquieting option at their fingertips; Robocops. The term Robocop first came into our collective consciousness with the release of the 1987 science fiction movie of the same name, written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, and directed by Paul Verhoeven. The action movie revolved around the murder of a police officer who is then revived -- with his body replaced by artificial parts. The film’s broad-based dystopian vision included corporate malfeasance, gangsters running amuck, the media, gentrification, authoritarianism, greed, privatization, and capitalism, according to Wikipedia.

The "Telebot" in Action


The late Roger Ebert called the film "a thriller with a difference." In 2007, Entertainment Weekly named it the #14 in its list of the greatest action movie of all time. A year later, Empire magazine chose it as one of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time, placing at #404, and The New York Times had it on its list of The Best 1000 Movies Ever Made. Last year’s RoboCop remake, while not nearly the critical success of the first film, brought in more that $240 million at the box office worldwide.

According to The Free Thought Project’s Justin Gardner, “By 2016, there will likely be a 6-foot tall police robot patrolling the streets and handing out parking tickets. The Telebot, developed by Florida International University’s Discovery Lab, has been field-tested and is undergoing final tune up."

The Telebot has a “menacing look” to it, designed to “intimidate and display a sense of authority.” But, say project designers, they want the robot to be created so that it doesn’t deter small children from approaching it.

Last year, the Miami New Times reported that Florida International University’s Discovery Lab, led by Jong-Hoon Kim, Nagarajan Prabakar and Sundaraja Sitharama Iyengar, and staffed mostly by undergraduate students, has been working on the project for nearly two years. The project “developed and built a functional, mobile, and interactive robot specially designed to help disabled officers and veterans return to the field.”

Remote Control War: Shining Light On The New War Strategy

Armed drones, special forces, privatization and secrecy are the preferred tools of military campaigns from Iraq-Syria to the Sahel. Now, researchers are mapping this landscape in the public interest.

The United States-led operation against the Islamic State is already faltering. The media focus on the fight for Kobani, on the border between Syria and Turkey, has meant neglect of the important advances being made by IS across Iraq's Anbar province. There, two months of airstrikes have so far had little effect, as the paramilitaries quickly adapt to the challenge.

In itself this ability to respond to air power is hardly surprising. Much of the Islamic State's leadership is drawn from militias that survived the western occupation of Iraq from 2003-10, in the process gaining more experience of the impact of air-assaults than just about any other group since the mujahideen that fought against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s (see "The thirty-year war, continued", 11 September 2014).
Patrick Cockburn, one of the best-informed western journalists, reports that the IS has taken over many towns and villages along the Euphrates west of Baghdad, saying they “fell in a few days, often after little resistance by the Iraqi Army which showed itself to be as dysfunctional as in the past, even when backed by US air strikes” (see Patrick Cockburn, "War against Isis: US air strategy in tatters as militants march on", Independent on Sunday, 12 October 2014). Several other despatches elaborate on further problems: the flight of army personnel from the city of Heet, in Anbar; the depserate siege of army units at Iraq's largest oil-refinery; even the prospect that the entire province is at risk.

Among many setbacks for the new Iraqi government, particularly damaging was the assassination on 12 October of Anbar province's police commander, Major-General Ahmen Saddag, when two roadside-bombs hit his heavily protected convoy (see Kirk Semple, “Bomb attack kills police chief in strategic Iraqi province", New York Times, 13 October 2014). The same day, three suicide-bombers attacked a security centre in Qara Taba district north-east of Baghdad, killing thirty people and injuring 140; the previous day, multiple bomb-attacks around Baghdad had taken more than lives and injured nearly a hundred.

A strategic shift

Barack Obama's stated aim is to use air-power to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the Islamic State. The creeping failure of the objective is already having an effect in Washington; the former presidential contender John McCain argues that “the United States should be sending targeted Special Forces troops and forward air-controllers…”

McCain may be speaking more as a politician rather than the military figure he once was, but he represents a view that is increasingly common inside the beltway, The implication is that the Obama administration now has to consider how to defeat the Islamic State without the incremental committment of tens of thousands of troops. What is virtually certain is that the US will move in the direction of “remote control”: that is, far greater use of air power, especially armed-drones, supplemented by a rapid expansion of the deployment of special forces. The latter would draw directly on the experience of the "shadow war" of 2004-07 fought mainly in Anbar province and the greater Baghdad area.
The combination - armed-drones, stand-off weapons, low-profile special forces - is initially attractive. At best, it guarantees little media coverage in the west, few of our boys getting killed, and useful results on the ground. After all, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was terminated in late 2001 using special forces, air-power and proxy ground-troops (the Northern Alliance), and the rebellion in Iraq was curbed, in part, by Task Force 145.

A way around secrecy

It seems simple - but it isn’t. The tools to make an informed judgment are increasingly available from a range of studies and projects now underway. This week, for example, sees the timely appearance of one of the first fruits of the Remote Control Project, an initiative of the Network for Social Change. The project, started in late 2013, is in turn hosted by Oxford Research Group.

This publication is all the more valuable as detailed research on "remote control" warfare is still in its early stages. In this case the group has sought out academics and think-tank experts to commission a very interesting range of work, about half of which has already been made available. The material so far is summarised in a handy digest released on 13 October; it includes reports on the use of cyberwarfare, summaries of regular monthly reports on diverse remote-control developments from Open Briefing, and a series of studies with intriguing results. There is much more to come.

Many investigators are concerned that independent research in this area is made so difficult by the high levels of secrecy and singular lack of transparency that surround it. The Every Casualty group, for example, finds it extremely difficult to get accurate information on civilian casualties caused by drone-strikes. It is especially hard to get accurate information on the use of special forces.

Three individual studies give a flavour of the work being done, often by getting round the obstacles of official secrecy.

First, Crofton Black does some lateral research - data-mining publicly available information on US defence-budget contracts to private companies hired by the US special-operations command (USSOCOM). What he discovered was the very high level of privatisation, involving billions of dollars, and the range of activities contracted out, even including psychological operations and interrogation. From a security perspective, such privatisation may provide an extra layer of secrecy; but it also means far less public transparency and debate over what is being done.

Second, Wali Aslam of the University of Bath, in another report, examines some of the side-effects of large-scale armed-drone operations in north-west Pakistan. One of his results, hardly surprising to anyone with common sense, was that leading jihadists likely to be subject to targeted killing simply relocated, often to cities where they could remain highly active if largely hidden from view

Third, a report on recent developments in the Sahel, particularly Mali and Niger offers insight into areas which have largely disappeared from the western media. In perhaps one of the most interesting pieces of research, the report uncovers a very quiet but speedy escalation in the US military presence, joining with reinforced French forces. In some ways the Sahel region is becoming a model for the new style of warfare - even a clear example of “liddism”, that is, keeping the lid on conflicts rather than going for the roots of the problems (see "Beyond 'liddism': toward real global security", 1 April 2010). This approach makes it necessary to work with some of the most autocratic regimes in the region, but always with the minimum of publicity.

A new direction


A common feature of much of this research is the conclusion that the various forms of remote warfare are leading to an increase in radicalisation and extreme actions, rather than the decrease they seek. This is part of a wider and uncomfortable conclusion that so much of the “war on terror” has not just failed but has made matters worse. Around 2010-12, especially after the killing of Osama bin Laden, a widespread view among western politicians and analysts was that al-Qaida and similar movements were way past their peak. Today, as in the military conference in Washington on 14 October, Barack Obama talks of a war lasting years.

An overall perspective suggests it is no longer possible to argue convincingly that drones, special forces and other forms of remote control are the answer to radical movements. The proper direction is to look much more deeply at the conditions which have encouraged these groups to develop. Otherwise, the idea of a war lasting years may be superseded by one lasting decades.

Each individual Kilobot doesn't look like much: just a few centimetres in diameter, on three almost comical matchstick-like legs. Powered only by a pair of coin batteries, they move by vibrating, shuffling forward on those funny sticks.

The impressive part is what they can do together. In a swarm 1,024 robots strong, they can organise themselves into two-dimensional shapes, requiring only the initial information input -- the shape they are to form -- via infrared light.

'Self Organizing' Systems In A Thousand Kilobot 'Swarm'


The Kilobots -- the work of Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences computer science professor Radhika Nagpal and her team -- are based on the behaviours of biological swarms, and are designed to demonstrate that simple robots are capable of enacting complex behaviours en masse.

"The beauty of biological systems is that they are elegantly simple -- and yet, in large numbers, accomplish the seemingly impossible," Nagpal said. "At some level, you no longer even see the individuals; you just see the collective as an entity to itself."

The way the Kilobots work is sheer genius in its simplicity. An initial set of instructions is beamed to the robots via infrared, after which they work autonomously, requiring no further human intervention.

An origami-inspired robot has been developed with the capability to self-assemble into a complex shape in just four minutes - and crawl away afterwards.

The robot, programmed to walk away at a speed of one-tenth of a mile per hour after assembly, was build using surprisingly uncomplicated components, including Shrinky dinks™ and paper.




The research was conducted by a team of engineers and computer scientists including Rob Wood and Sam Felton from the Wyss Institute, SEAS, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and has been described in Science.

The research could have a great impact on the design and assembly of robots, with progress in speed, cost and automation. The building process would also be complementary to 3D printing, which is becoming increasingly important in manufacturing.

The team has been designing a number of robots over the last few years, of which this is the first one capable of full self-assembly without the need for any human intervention.

AMERICA'S COMING TERROR DRONES: New Generation of Drones Won't Look Like Jets & Helicopters - They'll Pass for Insects & Birds, Operate Autonomously

Because of past publicity received by America's drones, most believe that when drones inevitably show up in the skies of their country these drones will resemble mini-jets and mini-helicopters.  In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.  Today's cutting edge drones are just as likely to resemble a roach, bird, horse, dog, or even a human. And plans are afoot to deploy these robots everywhere, including within the United States.

Let's take a look at some of the drone-spy equipment that high-tech weapons corporations are creating and intend to sell world-wide to any nation with the ability to buy. First let's look at "Micro Air Vehicles" (MAVs) brought to you by the 'Air Force Research Laboratory"

According to their own video the small size of MAVs allows them to be "hidden in plain sight." Once in place a MAV can "enter a low power surveillance mode for missions lasting days or weeks." It will harvest power from sunlight, wind or man made sources such as power lines. A swarm of MAVs will provide a 'big picture' point of view of the field of battle.

Tiny 'robot insects' will be deployed as a swarm.

Some MAVs will be used merely for visual reconnaissance, other individual MAVs will perform "direct attack missions" (a bug will land on your head and explode, or inject a deadly venom). The maker of these MAVs sound almost giddy as they brag about all of the potential military applications. These tiny but deadly drones will fly around your local park, sit on your window sill, crawl under the door into your home or place of work, or swim up threw your plumbing. And what happens if your dog or cat eats one of these by mistake?

Now you are probably thinking, "That's just a video, a corporation's dream packaged and marketed with animations but representing nothing more than future hopes."  Guess again. Such technology has been under development in some form or another for decades now and the technology will be available for deployment as a weapon in the very near future. In fact, we can assume that the military has secret projects that are far ahead of what is being done publicly at universities and corporations.  Take for example the robot drones already operational and programmed to fly in formation as a "swarm" of robots capable of taking off, flying and landing in unison - a literal coordinated team of flying robots.

Ghoulish geeks have even turned living insects into half-live/half-machine entities under their full control. In this case, researchers at the North Carolina State University have planted circuits into the body of a roach, claiming such half-live/half-machines could be used to "explore and map disaster sites."

Really? It's pretty easy to imagine what the military will use this technology for. You can even buy a "insect surgery kit" from a company called Backyard Brains which has been selling kits for turning insects into robots and are now seeking funding for "educational materials" for their surgery kits

Scientists at the Argonne Natl Lab have been developing robots that are just a half millimeter wide and composed of "micro-particles." These "micro-bots" are  small enough to climb into your ear or nose while you are sleeping; small enough to be placed on your food or in your drink; or perhaps they can be flushed into the water supply of a nuclear plant after which they can be made to perform "certain tasks" before anyone even realizes that "something is amiss." This particular research is being funded by the Department of Energy Office of Science. In this video micro-drones perform a task (picking up a glass bead) at the behest of their giant masters. What happens if (or when) humans lose control of such "drones?" Nobody, it seems, is bothering to ask.



Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there. Not satisfied with robots that can pass for birds or insects, or robots that "swarm" and act in unison, or robots that can barely be seen by the human eye - scientists (Should the word "mad" be placed before the word "scientist?") are developing a wide variety of robots that are capable of "self assembling," like the Pentagon's "shape-shifting robot" that can "fold into a boat or an airplane."

These "smart pepples" will get smaller and smaller.

Such robots are made of "programmable materials" that can create any shape the scientists designate.  One such "shape shifting, self assembling" robot under developing at MIT is "self-sculpting sand" that can "selectively, intelligently" replicate objects. This technology is being called "smart sand." Imagine a "pile of sand" that suddenly turns into a tank or missile, or human-like robot. It should come as no surprise that one of the key funders of this "research project" is the US Army Research Office.

Here's perhaps the most important aspect of this new generation of drones: What you have seen here represents only the tip of the iceberg.  Try to imagine the kinds of devices the US military and intelligence services don't want you to know about and you begin to get an inkling of what's in store for the future of humankind.
