Opposing Iran Nuclear Deal, Chuck Schumer Rattles Democratic Firewall

By
The decision by Senator Chuck Schumer to oppose President Obama’s deal to limit Iran’s nuclear program rattled the Democratic firewall around the accord, but supporters said Democratic defections in New York and South Florida would not be enough to bring down the agreement.

This man [Chuck Schumer] is traitor to his country and to his party.
RELATED STORY: Bernie Sanders Announces Support for Iran Nuclear Deal

He should never be allowed to lead the senate democratic caucus. His first allegiance has been and will always be Israel. If he is selected to lead the democrats, plan on more US wars in the middle-east so Israel can continue to maintain its apartheid regime with American blood.

I will not give one penny to senate democrats if they continue to support republicans and Israel over the United States and our democratic president.

I hope democrats will rise up in opposition to this traitor.

Special Nuclear Rules for The Chosen People: Israel Resists Inspections of Its Nuke Facilities — As It Demands Access to Iran's

While Israel screams about the possibility of Iran getting nuclear weapons, Israel already has hundreds of atomic weapons. The West has demanded—and achieved—inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, and negotiations to limit Iran's ability to produce atomic weapons.  Meanwhile, Israel hasn't had a single inspection, is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (Iran is), and hasn't agreed to negotiate a damn thing with anybody regarding its nuclear arsenal.  In fact, Iran has signed treaties forsaking the possession of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons.  Israel has not.

Israel Wary of Subjecting its Nuclear Facilities to International Supervision

By Middle East Monitor
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Monday that Israel "has begun a diplomatic campaign to thwart a resolution to subject its nuclear facilities to international supervision."
RELATED STORY: Mid East Nukes and Hypocrisy: Israel Has Hundreds of Unregulated Nukes — Yet Prepares Media Blitz Over Iran's Non-Nuke Program
The newspaper added that the draft resolution, which was submitted at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is supported by Egypt, Jordan and other Arab and Islamic countries.

The newspaper noted that a senior official in the Israeli Foreign Ministry expressed his fears that the deal with Iran would make it difficult for Israel to deal with such a demand.

The draft resolution seeks to force Israel to open its nuclear facilities to international observers. It also calls for a meeting of the international committee specialised in making the Middle East a nuclear-free zone.

Haaretz added that such a resolution, if passed, would not be binding under the UN Security Council, but it would cause significant political damage to Israel, bring international attention to Israel's nuclear facilities and prompt the IAEA to take further steps against Israel.

'The Sampson Option': Israel Has Threatened to Nuke European Capitals if it Ever Falls

"We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force. Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: 'Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.' I consider it all hopeless at this point. We shall have to try to prevent things from coming to that, if at all possible. Our armed forces, however, are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under."

By Wikipedia
The Samson Option is the name that some military analysts and authors have given to Israel's deterrence strategy of massive retaliation with nuclear weapons as a "last resort" if military attacks threaten its existence. Commentators also have employed the term to refer to situations where non-nuclear, non-Israeli By, have threatened conventional weapons retaliation. Two examples have been given: Yassir Arafat[1] and Hezbollah.[2]

The name is a reference to the biblical figure Samson who pushed apart the pillars of a Philistine temple, bringing down the roof and killing himself and thousands of Philistines who had captured him,[3] crying out "Let me die with the Philistines!" (Judges 16:30).[4]

Nuclear ambiguity

Israel refuses to confirm or deny it has nuclear weapons or to describe how it would use them, an official policy of nuclear ambiguity, also known as "nuclear opacity." This has made it difficult for anyone outside the Israeli government to describe the country's true nuclear policy definitively, while still allowing Israel to influence the perceptions, strategies and actions of other governments.[5][6] However, over the years, some Israeli leaders have publicly acknowledged their country's nuclear capability: Ephraim Katzir in 1974, Moshe Dayan in 1981, Shimon Peres in 1998, and Ehud Olmert in 2006.[7]

Security Adviser Aleksandr Lebed claimed that the Russian military had lost track of more than 100

______________

During his 2006 confirmation hearings before the United States Senate regarding his appointment as George W. Bush's Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates admitted that Israel had nuclear weapons.[7] In his 2008 book The Culture of War, Martin van Creveld, a professor of military history at Israel’s Hebrew University, wrote that since Gates admitted that Israel had nuclear weapons, any talk of Israel's nuclear weapons in Israel can lead to "arrest, trial, and imprisonment." Thus Israeli commentators talk about "doomsday weapons" and the Samson Option.[8]

Nevertheless, as early as 1976, the CIA believed that Israel possessed 10 to 20 nuclear weapons.[9] By 2002 it was estimated that the number had increased to between 75 and 200 thermonuclear weapons, each in the multiple-megaton range.[10] Kenneth S. Brower has estimated as many as 400 nuclear weapons.[11] These can be launched from land, sea and air.[12] This gives Israel a second strike option even if much of the country is destroyed.[13]

Deterrence doctrine

Main articles: Nuclear strategy, Deterrence theory and Assured destruction

Although nuclear weapons were viewed as the ultimate guarantor of Israeli security, as early as the 1960s the country avoided building its military around them, instead pursuing absolute conventional superiority so as to forestall a last resort nuclear engagement.[14] The original conception of the Samson Option was only as deterrence. According to United States journalist Seymour Hersh and Israeli historian Avner Cohen, Israeli leaders like David Ben-Gurion, Shimon Peres, Levi Eshkol and Moshe Dayan coined the phrase in the mid-1960s. They named it after the biblical figure Samson, who pushed apart the pillars of a Philistine temple, bringing down the roof and killing himself and thousands of Philistines who had captured him, mutilated him, and gathered to see him further humiliated in chains. They contrasted it with ancient siege of Masada where 936 Jewish Sicarii committed mass suicide rather than be defeated and enslaved by the Romans.[15][16]

The so-called "Davey Crockett" is allegedly the smallest nuke in the US arsenal.

In the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Arab forces were overwhelming Israeli forces and Prime Minister Golda Meir authorized a nuclear alert and ordered 13 atomic bombs be readied for use by missiles and aircraft. The Israeli Ambassador warned President Nixon of "very serious conclusions" if the United States did not airlift supplies. Nixon complied. This is seen by some commentators on the subject as the first threat of the use of the Samson Option.[17][18][19][20][21]

Seymour Hersh writes that the "surprising victory of Menachem Begin's Likud Party in the May 1977 national elections... brought to power a government that was even more committed than Labor to the Samson Option and the necessity of an Israeli nuclear arsenal."[22]

A "Backpack Nuke"
Louis René Beres, a professor of Political Science at Purdue University, chaired Project Daniel, a group advising Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. He argues in the Final Report of Project Daniel and elsewhere that the effective deterrence of the Samson Option would be increased by ending the policy of nuclear ambiguity.[23] In a 2004 article he recommends Israel use the Samson Option threat to “support conventional preemptions” against enemy nuclear and non-nuclear assets because “without such weapons, Israel, having to rely entirely upon non-nuclear forces, might not be able to deter enemy retaliations for the Israeli preemptive strike.”[24]

Writers' comments on the strategy

Ari Shavit writes of Israel's nuclear strategy: "Concerning anything and everything nuclear, Israel would be much, much more cautious than the United States and NATO. Concerning anything and everything nuclear, Israel would be the responsible adult of the international community. It would well understand the formidable nature of the demon and keep it locked in the basement".[25]

Some have written about the "Samson Option" as a retaliation strategy. In 2002, the Los Angeles Times published an opinion piece by Louisiana State University professor David Perlmutter which the American Jewish author Ron Rosenbaum writes "goes so far as to justify" a Samson Option approach:[26]

Israel has been building nuclear weapons for 30 years. The Jews understand what passive and powerless acceptance of doom has meant for them in the past, and they have ensured against it. Masada was not an example to follow—it hurt the Romans not a whit, but Samson in Gaza? What would serve the Jew-hating world better in repayment for thousands of years of massacres but a Nuclear Winter. Or invite all those tut-tutting European statesmen and peace activists to join us in the ovens? For the first time in history, a people facing extermination while the world either cackles or looks away—unlike the Armenians, Tibetans, World War II European Jews or Rwandans—have the power to destroy the world. The ultimate justice?[27]

Ron Rosenbaum writes in his 2012 book How the End Begins: The Road to a Nuclear World War III that, in his opinion, in the "aftermath of a second Holocaust", Israel could "bring down the pillars of the world (attack Moscow and European capitals for instance)" as well as the "holy places of Islam." He writes that "abandonment of proportionality is the essence" of the Samson Option.[28]

In 2003, a military historian, Martin van Creveld, thought that the Al-Aqsa Intifada then in progress threatened Israel's existence.[29] Van Creveld was quoted in David Hirst's The Gun and the Olive Branch (2003) as saying:

We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.[30]

In 2012, in response to Günter Grass's poem "Was gesagt werden muss" ("What Must Be Said") which criticized Israel's nuclear weapons program, Israeli poet and Holocaust survivor Itamar Yaoz-Kest published a poem entitled "The Right to Exist: a Poem-Letter to the German Author" which addresses Grass by name. It contains the line: "If you force us yet again to descend from the face of the Earth to the depths of the Earth — let the Earth roll toward the Nothingness." Jerusalem Post journalist Gil Ronen saw this poem as referring to the Samson Option, which he described as the strategy of using Israel's nuclear weapons, "taking out Israel's enemies with it, possibly causing irreparable damage to the entire world."[31]

Israël and Its Nuclear Arsenal: Is It Using Tactical 'Mini-Nukes' in Yemen? (Video)

During his interview of the 14th July on TF1 and France2, President François Hollande denied that Israël possesses the atomic bomb. But the Hebrew state has between 80 and 400 nuclear war-heads, and has already used neutron bombs against civilian populations. Is Mr. Hollande ignorant, to the point where he should be judged inapt to assume the responsibilities of Head of the Armed Forces and the strike force, or simply using bad faith in contempt of his fellow citizens ?

By Thierry Meyssan, Translated by Pete Kimberley
On the 20th May 2015, Israël, which participates in the Common Arab Force, dropped a neutron bomb in Yemen. This type of tactical nuclear weapon kills living creatures without damaging the infrastructures.

The traditional interview of the President of the French Republic on the 14th July, the date of the national celebrations, was this year the occasion for François Hollande to express all sorts of indecent and absurd opinions.

I would like to draw your attention to the following passage in response to a question from Claire Chazal about the 5+1 agreements with Iran :

« France has been very firm in these negotiations, and Laurent Fabius chaired the meetings with much rigour and solidity.

What was my preoccupation ? Avoiding nuclear proliferation. What does nuclear proliferation mean ? That would mean that Iran could develop the atomic bomb. If Iran were to develop the nuclear bomb, Saudi Arabia, Israel and other countries would also want to develop a nuclear bomb. It would be a risk for the entire planet. So, we had to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. » [1]

So President Hollande, the Head of the Armed Forces and as such, controller of France’s nuclear capability, claims that Israël has no nuclear weapons.

Yet everybody knows that Israël is one of the four nuclear powers who have not signed the non-proliferation treaty (with India, Pakistan and the Popular Democratic Republic of Korea.

The Third Temple's Holy of Holies: Israel's Nuclear Weapons
(Despite this study by a US Army officer, US officials—and corporate media

______________

It was in 1956 that the President of the French Council, Guy Mollet (François Hollande’s predecessor at the head of the Socialist Party), organised the transfer of nuclear technology from France to Israël. In order to do so, he organised an office at the Hôtel de Matignon for Shimon Peres (future President of Israël) from which Peres supervised the project. France built the nuclear plant at Dimona in the Negev desert, and Shimon Peres became its director. Israël also participated in the French nuclear experiments in the Algerian desert. A partisan of colonisation, Guy Mollet relied on Israël in his fight against the Algerian FLN and the war against Egypt (the Suez Canal « crisis »).

This cooperation deteriorated under Charles De Gaulle and ended with the decolonisation of Algeria. When Israël attacked its Arab neighbours, Egypt, Jordan and Syria, in 1967 (theory of « preventive war») De Gaulle broke off his relations with Israël. A few days later, the United States signed a secret agreement with Israël which authorised it to keep the bomb on the condition that it did not publicise it, and would refrain from any new experiments.
RELATED STORY: Israel could use dirty nuke in false flag attack in US — Ex-CIA contractor
Israël continued its research with British aid at first – Britain notably supplied it with ready-to-use combustibles – then, from 1975, with the help of South Africa. It benefited from the South African nuclear explosions, especially in 1979 in the Indian Ocean, without this being considered a violation of her agreement with Washington.

Israël currently has between 80 and 400 nuclear war-heads, and a large number of neutron bombs. Indeed, because of the topography, strategic nuclear weapons are impossible to use in the environment close to Israël. So the Hebrew state has specialised in neutron bombs, whose range of action is smaller. These are capitalist armements par excellence, because they kill people but do not damage property.

Not All Nuclear Weapons Are "Massive"
Clockwise From Top Left: Suitcase Nuke, Backpack Nuke, and
the so called "Davey Crockett" Nuke (alledgedly the smallest
nuke in the US arsenal).
The entire programme was revealed by an Israeli scientist who was opposed to apartheid, Mordechaï Vanunu, in 1986 in the Sunday Times [2]. He was then kidnapped in Rome by the Mossad, repatriated to Israel. and kept under secret imprisonment for 18 years. Freed in 2004, but kept under house arrest, he gave an interview to Silvia Cattori and was immediately reincarcerated for having spoken to journalists [3].

In 2002, the Israeli strategist Martin Van Creveld made a public statement about the status of the Israeli nuclear arsenal, and threatened the Europeans with retaliation on their territory if they continued to support the Palestinians [4]. There was talk at that time of the « Samson complex », in other words, the threat of a destructive Israeli suicide rather than a defeat.

On the 6th December 2006, the US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, admitted during a Senate hearing that Israel possessed the atomic bomb. A few days later, the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, admitted as much with a throw-away phrase during an interview with the German channel, N24.

The most powerful unclassified nuclear detonation ever was by what was then the Soviet Union.
Code Name: IVAN — Equivalent to 57 million tons of TNT: Detonated on
October 30, 1961.
Russia and the United States has nukes twice as powerful.

In 2010, 18 Arab states managed to include the question of « Israeli nuclear capacities » in the Agenda of the AIEA (International Agency for Atomic Energy). The United Nations then organised a conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty, during which the Islamic Republic of Iran proposed the creation of a « nuclear-free zone in the Middle East » [5], on the model of the agreements made in Latin America and Central Asia. However, the project failed due to the opposition of Israël and the United States. The US had been illegally storing nuclear weapons in Turkey.

Recently, Israël used neutron bombs in Khiam, during the war of 2006 against Lebanon, and again in Yemen on the 20th May 2015. In both cases, measures of radioactivity were made.

Why would President Hollande deny facts which have been so comprehensively established ? Is it ignorance, or because he is attempting to justify the French position during the negotiations with Iran, to the point of becoming confused by his own propaganda ?

On the 17th November 2013, when he arrived at Ben-Gourion airport in Tel-Aviv, François Hollande declared, in Hebrew, « "Tamid écha-èr ravèr chèl Israël" - "I am your friend and I always will be." » [6].

It’s still a bit early to safely assess if a memorandum of understanding on curbing Iran’s nuclear program will be signed between Tehran and the superpowers or what exactly it will include. The deadline set for finishing this round of talks in Lausanne is Tuesday.

This is the stage at which the spin machines of the negotiators are working overtime to influence the final wording of the agreement. Although both sides have demonstrated a desire to reach a deal and have expressed optimism regarding the chances of doing so, there may be last-minute twists.

Israel’s role in the drama is limited to expressions of skepticism and reprimands from the sidelines. With his loud bickering with the Obama administration, culminating in his speech to Congress early this month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has inadvertently positioned himself as someone whom the Americans won’t take seriously.

Now Netanyahu has only two cards left to play – public warnings of destruction arising from an agreement, and indirect political pressure through congressional Republicans. Practically speaking, senior Israeli officials half admit that under the circumstances that have emerged, they would oppose any pending deal with Iran, regardless of its details.

As President Obama presses to reach an accord with Iran on its nuclear program by the end of the month, he can count on strong support from what might seem like an unlikely segment of the population: American Jews.

Jewish backing of the administration’s efforts to strike a deal suggests that American Jews aren’t heeding the alarms being sounded in Israel by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He warns that any deal that leaves Iran with an enrichment program constitutes a mortal danger to Israel.Strong Jewish support for a nuclear deal that limits, but doesn’t completely stop, Iran’s uranium enrichment abilities was a surprise finding of a telephone poll of Jewish voters who took part in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The poll, commissioned by J Street – the self-described “pro-Israel, pro-peace” Washington lobbying organization – also found strong support for an active US role in efforts to forge Arab-Israeli peace.

Human Shields, A-Bombs and the Origins of Gaza, Hamas and the Current Conflict: Big Media is Lying by Omission

Hamas Was Created by the Israeli Government

Palestinian children being used as human shields by the Israeli Army. (Screen capture
from YouTube video)
By Ronald David Jackson
We all watch as Israel bombards Gaza with 'precision' weapons that kill mostly women, children, and those unfortunate enough to be found near mosques, clinics, or in coffee shops.  Big media* tells us that the air, land and see bombardment is Israel's "response" to rockets fired by "that big bad terrorist organization" called Hamas. But big media doesn't bother to remind us that Hamas was created by the Israeli government. Even the Wall Street Journal is willing to publish that fact in an article in which one of the conspirators called Israel's creation of Hamas "an enormous, stupid mistake."

Once every several years a big media outlet might remind us about the role of Israel in creating Hamas. That's brainwashing via lying by omission. The lie is based on the cover up of the fact that Israel created and supported Hamas in the first place — to weaken Yasser Arafat. Israel wanted a more militant, fundamentalist, and younger movement which could draw members away from  Arafat's older, more established organization and sabotage the peace process. The Israeli plotters got what they wanted. But, as usual, the "Frankenstein Monster" got out of control. Or did it?  Hamas is now a "convenient" organization that Israel can bully and blame for its own failings, use as an excuse to bomb, blockade and starve off Gaza, use to garner sympathy, and use to unify its people behind a cabal of racist, right-wing leaders (by giving Hamas no other choice but to fire rockets). And it all works very well.  As long as you don't remind everyone that Israel created Hamas in the first place.

Israel Cynically Used the Kidnapping of Israeli Teens To Trigger a Dispute With Hamas

Big media's narrative on how the rocket firing by Hama got started in the first place is more lying by omission.  Big media won't remind us that before Hamas started firing rockets, Israel had arrested hundreds of Palestinians, killed and brutalized adults and children, and blew up the homes of Palestinian "suspects" without providing a shred of evidence proving a connection between any of those killed and arrested and the kidnapping of Jewish settlers. Big media forgets to remind us that Israeli snipers murdered two Palestinian teenagers—for no reason whatsoever—weeks before the kidnapping of the Israel settlers.

Israeli snipers kill two Palestinian
teens in cold blood
(May 15th, 2014)

Warning, Graphic: Viewer discretion advised.

Big media "forgets" to remind us that the Israeli government knew the kidnapped settlers were dead almost as soon as they were kidnapped, but that the Israeli government hid that fact and pretended to conduct operations geared toward finding the kidnapped teens "alive." By extension, big media fails to tell us that therefore the Israeli government used the kidnapping as an excuse to turn the lives of ordinary Palestinians upside down, all in an effort to break the recent rapprochement of Hamas with the Palestinian Authority.

Big media offers us virtually no commentary on the murder of a Hamas leader and his entire immediate family.  Big media won't ask the question, "Suppose Hamas dropped a bomb in Tel Aviv in an attack on an Israeli military commander and killed the commander and his entire family?"  Big media won't pose such questions for us, rendering their entire "Israel as victim, Hamas as villain" scenario just one more lie passed off as "balanced" news coverage. Lying by omission.

Big Media's "Coverage" of the "Iran Atomic Bomb Threat" is Another Lie by Omission

Big media publishes phony estimates of "how many more months before Iran will be capable of producing an atomic weapon" without reminding us that Israel already has hundreds of atomic weapons. Underlying this particular super lie is the "special treatment" big media doesn't want to admit Israel gets from big media. A big media which constantly reminds us of the "big threat" of Iran's atomic bomb potential while saying nothing about the reality of Israel's hundreds of A-bombs. Thus the scenario of big media's "Iran is the nuclear threat and Israel is under nuclear threat" is yet another big lie by omission.

How Was Gaza Created in the First Place? Big Media Doesn't Like to Talk About it

Another lie by omission is the (lack of) coverage of how Gaza was created in the first place.  Big media will seldom say. But here and there we can find a few brave and honest souls, like Robert Fisk, who will remind us:

"[N]ow the Palestinians are getting their comeuppance. Sure. But wait, how come all those Palestinians – all 1.5 million – are crammed into Gaza in the first place? Well, their families once lived, didn’t they, in what is now called Israel? And got chucked out – or fled for their lives – when the Israeli state was created.

Palestinian loss of land: 1946-2010
(click image to see full-sized image)
"And – a drawing in of breath is now perhaps required – the people who lived in Sederot in early 1948 were not Israelis, but Palestinian Arabs. Their village was called Huj. Nor were they enemies of Israel. Two years earlier, these same Arabs had actually hidden Jewish Haganah fighters from the British Army. But when the Israeli army turned up at Huj on 31 May 1948, they expelled all the Arab villagers – to the Gaza Strip! Refugees, they became. David Ben Gurion (Israel’s first Prime Minister) called it an “unjust and unjustified action”. Too bad. The Palestinians of Huj were never allowed back."

Israel Uses Human Shields Too

When Israeli aerial and naval bombardment, tank assaults, ground attacks, and drone assassinations result in the death of civilians big media is more than willing to explain how Hamas embeds its military facilities near civilians and runs military ("terrorist") operations in civilian areas. The Israeli government and Western leaders are constantly accusing Hamas of using human shields. As if it was possible for Hamas to run its military facilities and operations anywhere else, given the fact Gaza's 1.5 million inhabitants are stuffed into a thin strip of land that totals a mere 139 square miles and is considered "one of most densely populated parts of the world."

At times, Palestinian civilians have acted as human shields to protect their homes and other buildings and volunteers from around the world have agreed to act as human shields to protect vital facilities in Gaza, like hospitals. Keep in mind these are volunteers, not people who are forced to act as human shields.

Video released by Israel's government show civilians acting as
human shields to protect buildings

While big media is quick to mention Hamas' alleged use of human shields, it doesn't tell us that there is actual footage of Israeli soldiers and police using Palestinians as human shields. In this case these are not volunteers but people—even children—who were forced to put their lives on the line to protect Israeli soldiers and police.

Israeli police use cuffed teen as a Human Shield

The managers of big media know that if they were to show you Israel's use of human shields every time Israel accuses Hamas of using human shields - it would put an entirely different spin on the entire human shields debate. That's why big media doesn't show you the footage or mention Israel's proven use of human shields. And that's lying by omission.

The New Godzilla Film is Yet Another Example of Hollywood's Military Fetishism

Godzilla - Wikipedia/Toho Company Ltd.
Wikipedia/Toho Company Ltd. Some rights reserved.
“Hollywood is a fundamental cog in the propaganda machine” The most recent film of Godzilla only serves to highlight Hollywood's fetishism of military hardware and glorify an expansionist militarism.

By Nick MacWilliam
A gargantuan, lizard-like specimen lumbers around hungrily, trampling over the population and laying waste to one of the world’s great cities. No, it’s not a long-awaited Boris Johnson biopic but the latest incarnation of Godzilla. I’ve always had a thing for the Big G, regularly staying up late as a kid to watch 3am screenings of the Japanese b-movies on Channel 4 and revelling wide-eyed in the spectacle of actors in rubber suits rolling around over model buildings. Best of all was that piercing shriek, the one that says “I’m here, humanity. Let’s play.”

But Godzilla was far more than simply watching giant creatures beat the hell out of each across ruined urban landscapes. There was the political allegory of the original 1954 film, in which the destruction of cities represented a metaphor for the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima which had occurred less than a decade previously. Beneath the veneer of fantasy carnage, the series resonated with the very real fear of nuclear holocaust, represented through the awesome image of Godzilla and other similarly-sized beasts. The critical element lessened as the series grew ever more commercially lucrative, with cartoons, toys and Hollywood remakes, but Godzilla remained an important cinematic and cultural reference. It was through the terrifying robotic form of Mechagodzilla that I learnt to appreciate, as an eight-year-old, what total destruction entailed.

The new film sees Godzilla play second fiddle to US military prowess and heroism, only really turning up late on and even then not hanging round for very long. As with several other Hollywood blockbusters of recent times, there is a quasi-pornographic fetishism to the gratuitous focus on military hardware. For every one minute of ‘zilla on-screen presence, there are seemingly another five of helicopters, tanks, aircraft carriers and so on, glistening sexily against a backdrop of incoherent story-lines and implausible narrative (even for a film about a 100 metre-tall lizard).

Whereas the Japanese creators of Godzilla intended the character to serve as a warning of impending catastrophe, the new film’s driving ambition is to assert the moral right of US military expansionism. Throughout the film, audiences watch set-piece after set-piece in which the military plays a vital role in saving humanity, with the title character merely providing context to which these fantasies can be applied. Other than slap a couple of other monsters about, Godzilla actually does very little: the key elements in saving the day come about either directly or indirectly from the actions of the armed forces.

The reality, of course, is that the US military and its allies are engaged in conflicts which have cost the lives of over a million people in Iraq and Afghanistan, somehow still occupying both countries in spite of the stated objectives for launching these wars being completed several years ago. These ongoing campaigns have largely disappeared from the mainstream media, but operations continue in these countries. If you spend a lot of time in cinemas, you could be forgiven for thinking the military spent its time engaging with sea monsters or aliens rather than actual human beings.

US political rhetoric will have you believe that real-life foes are just as large a threat to civilisation as any fictional city-munching space bug, but Hollywood execs' are generally unwilling to place the military in scenarios that actually exist. The exception is in films such as The Hurt Locker in which the portrayal of US forces invariably involves a high degree of individual bravado and brooding lonerism, traits inherited from North American audiences’ long affiliation with the western genre. This is cowboy convention transplanted to the Middle East.

So, why are audiences continuously submitted to false representations of the role of the military? Filmgoers are unlikely to react well to a truer portrayal of the hostile acts committed in their name, such as the aerial bombardment of impoverished mountain villages in Afghanistan. Nor does their cinematic escapism make room for images of, say, limbless Iraqis, victims of a conflict they help to fund. Showing these realistic scenarios would have the reverse effect on public support for the military that our governments seek to engender, hence the invention of situations which elevate the military into the role of saviour.

Hollywood is a fundamental cog in the propaganda machine. Go to the cinema, ogle over all that racy machinery, and bathe in the deluded warmth of military just cause. I started to suspect my sentiments were being manipulated when I found myself rooting for a sidewinder missile as it hurtled its way towards an evil Transformer engaged in massacring humans. In real life, it is not Transformers but these very missiles that massacre humans, yet here was a narrative which turned reality on its head. I was watching a fabrication in which a weapon designed to kill on a large scale was re-imagined as a symbol of protection and valour. As audiences, we are being coerced into forming views far removed from any semblance of truth.

Following on from the likes of Battleship, Transformers and The Avengers, Godzilla is yet another film which seeks to direct us into supporting the disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as building momentum for future conflicts. Primarily targeted at children, these blockbuster movies present an utterly distorted worldview in which aggressor becomes victim and subsequently a heroic figure. Mainstream entertainment is simply another channel through which we are told what to believe. Godzilla’s message is that military expansionism is a morally righteous act which benefits and protects us, and is therefore necessary for our survival. And that is a monster lie.

The U.S. Air Force's nuclear command has been rocked by a cheating scandal involving nearly three dozen officers.

Cheating on a proficiency exam involving intercontinental missile launch officers at the Global Strike Command at Malmstrom Air Force base in Montana apparently was carried out around last August and September by text and appears to be the largest incident of its kind, the Pentagon said.

"This is absolutely unacceptable behavior and it is completely contrary to our core values in the Air Force and as everybody here knows the Number One core value for us is integrity," Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James told reporters.
