A resident living in an apartment building in New Jersey directly across the river from Manhattan's World Trade Center witnessed several men in a nearby parking lot taking photographs, video taping and celebrating as they watched the twin towers tumble to the ground on September 11, 2001.  The police were called and a dragnet was put in place for a white van driven by "Arabs seen celebrating the demise of the World Trade Center." At the time it was assumed the celebrants might be somehow connected to the terror attack — after all, they were seen celebrating the attack.

The five individuals pictured above were subsequently arrested. The van they were driving was reportedly found to have traces of explosives, they had maps highlighting the World Trade Center as well as the location where they were seen celebrating, and the arresting officers said they were behaving suspiciously.  Later, a police report showed the van's occupants lied about where they were when the jets hit the twin towers. The van they were driving was owned by New Jersey-based Urban Moving Systems, later identified as a front company for Israel's intelligence service, Mossad. The owner of Urban Moving Systems, Dominick Suter, fled back to Israel before he could be apprehended, and the FBI confiscated computers and other items in a raid on his offices.  The materials captured in the raid have been "classified."

Other white trucks and vans were intercepted that day, including one reportedly "packed with  explosives" which was stopped near the George Washington Bridge, and one with a mural depicting the World Trade Center under attack by an airliner. It was speculated that the van with the twin tower attack mural was a "decoy" designed to draw attention.

During FBI interrogations all five of the "Dancing Israelis" failed polygraph tests. But after much behind-the-scenes pressure by the Israeli government they were released after 71 days, reportedly under orders of Michael Chertoff who was then head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division.

Upon their return to Israel, some of the "Dancing Israelis" appeared on an Israeli talk show. During the show, which has been posted on YouTube, one of them said, "The fact of the matter is, we are coming from a country that experiences terror daily. Our purpose was to document the event."  Was this a slip of the tongue or a merely bad translation of what he really meant?

If witnesses and FBI documents are to be believed, the "Dancing Israelis" shed no tears for the people who died in the twins towers that day — instead they celebrated it. Strange behavior indeed for agents in the employ of a country the U.S. has supported and defended through thick and thin. Shouldn't they have been at least as shocked and heartbroken over the events of 911 as most other citizens of the world?

The clear implication regarding the behavior of the "Dancing Israelis" is that elements within the Israeli government—and/or elements within the U.S. government—had foreknowledge of the 911 attacks and did not provide a warning to the people who went to work at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. That would make them culpable in that war crime, whether they planned, funded, or designed the operation themselves or simply detected it and let it happen.

The CIA and America’s Presidents

Many people still think of the CIA as an agency designed to help American presidents make informed decisions about matters outside the United States. That was the basis for President Truman’s signing the legislation which created the agency, and indeed it does serve that role, generally rather inadequately, but it has become something far beyond that.

Information is certainly not something to which any reasonable person objects, but the CIA has two houses under its roof, and it is the operational side of the CIA which gives it a world-wide bad reputation. The scope of undercover operations has evolved to make the CIA into a kind of civilian army, one involving great secrecy, little accountability, and huge budgets – altogether a dangerous development indeed for any country which regards itself as a democracy and whose military is forbidden political activity. After all, the CIA’s secret operational army in practice is not curtailed by restrictions around politics, many of its tasks having been quite openly political. Yes, its charter forbids operations in the United States, but those restrictions have been ignored or bent countless times both in secret programs like Echelon (monitoring telephone communications by five English-speaking allies who then share the information obtained, a forerunner to the NSA’s recently-revealed collection of computer data) and years of mail-opening inside the United States or using substitutes to go around the rule, as was likely the case with the many Mossad agents trailing the eventual perpetrators of 9/11 inside the United States before the event.

As with all large, powerful institutions over time, the CIA constantly seeks expansion of its means and responsibilities, much like a growing child wanting ever more food and clothing and entertainment. This inherent tendency, the expansion of institutional empire, is difficult enough to control under normal circumstances, but when there are complex operations in many countries and tens of billions in spending and many levels of secrecy and secret multi-level files, the ability of any elected politicians – whose keenest attention is always directed towards re-election and acquiring enough funds to run a campaign – to exercise meaningful control and supervision becomes problematic at best. The larger and more complex the institution becomes, the truer this is.

Under Eisenhower, the CIA’s operational role first came to considerable prominence, which is hardly surprising considering Eisenhower was a former Supreme Commander in the military, the military having used many dark operations during WWII, operations still classified in some cases. In his farewell address, it is true, Eisenhower gave Americans a dark warning about the “military-industrial complex,” but as President he used CIA dark operations extensively, largely to protect American corporate interests in various parts of the world – everything from oil interests to banana monopolies in Central America. Perhaps, he viewed the approach as less destructive or dangerous or likely to tarnish America’s post-WWII reputation than “sending in the Marines,” America’s traditional gang of paid-muscle for such tasks, but, over the long term, he was wrong, and his extensive use of CIA operations would prove highly destructive and not just tarnish America’s image but totally shatter it. It set in motion a number of developments and problems that haunt America to this day.

One thing is absolutely clear, Kennedy’s assassination was about Cuba, and it was conceived out of a simmering conviction that Kennedy literally was not fit to be President. No important person who ever expressed a quiet opinion on the matter – including Mrs. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and some members of the Warren Commission – ever believed the fantasy story fashioned by the Warren Commission. Neither did informed observers abroad – the Russian and French governments for example later expressed their views – as well as a great many ordinary Americans.

In the war on the Islamic State, the alleged scourge of humanity, little is heard about the position of America’s much-ballyhooed greatest ally in the Middle East, if not the world, Israel. Now the Islamic State has been conquering territory in very close proximity to the border of Israel. But Israel does not seem to be fearful and it is not taking any action.

And the Obama administration and American media pundits do not seem to be the least bit disturbed. This is quite in contrast to the complaints about other Middle East countries such as Turkey that are being harshly criticized for their failure to become actively involved in fighting the Islamic State.

In response to Internet queries as to why the militant group wasn’t fighting Israel instead of killing Muslims in Iraq and Syria, its representatives responded: “We haven’t given orders to kill the Israelis and the Jews. The war against the nearer enemy, those who rebel against the faith, is more important. Allah commands us in the Koran to fight the hypocrites, because they are much more dangerous than those who are fundamentally heretics.”

As justification for this stance, the group cited the position of the first caliph, Abu Bakr, who began his caliphate by fighting against those he deemed apostates who still professed to be followers of Islam. (Shiites hold a negative view of Abu Bakr and his policies). Also cited was Saladin, who fought the Shiites in Egypt before conquering Christian-controlled Jerusalem.

Considering the Islamic State is targeting Muslims, the Israeli government does not see it as a significant enemy at this time. And it is reasonable for Israeli leaders to believe that the Islamic State would never move on to attack their country because it will never be able to conquer its major Islamic foes, though American military involvement would further secure Israel from any possible threat from the Islamic State.

Moreover, the fact of the matter is that the Islamic State actually benefits Israel by causing problems for those very states that do actively oppose Israel and support the Palestinians, such as Syria. What the Islamic State is causing in the Middle East is perfectly attuned with the view of the Israeli Right — as best articulated by Oded Yinon in 1982 — which sought to have Israel’s Middle East enemies fragmented and fighting among themselves in order to weaken the external threat to Israel.

Currently, these divisions are not only plaguing Syria and Iraq, but also Turkey, where ethnic Kurds are rioting because of the government’s unwillingness to help their brethren in Syria, and Lebanon, where the Shiite group Hezbollah — allied with Iran, Israel’s foremost enemy — is being assailed by the radical jihadist Nusra Front, which has the support of many Lebanese Sunnis. Israeli Military Threatens to Discipline Veterans Involved in Protest Over Intelligence Activities

The Israeli military on Sunday threatened disciplinary action against a group of veterans and active reservists of a secretive military intelligence unit who declared that they would no longer participate in surveillance activities against the Palestinians.

Dozens of other veterans and reservists from the unit came to its defense and expressed outrage at their colleagues’ public act of refusal.

The protest and counterprotest exposed some of the complexities of life in Israel, where most 18-year-olds are conscripted for up to three years of service, and the episode set off an impassioned debate that had far more to do with the nature of military service and the selective refusal of duties than with the concerns raised by the would-be whistle-blowers about the treatment of the Palestinians under occupation.

Officials and politicians from the right and the left harshly criticized the 43 veterans of the elite Unit 8200, who lodged their protest in a letter sent Thursday night to their commanders as well as to Israel’s prime minister and army chief. The letter was made public on Friday. They wrote that they refused to continue to be “tools” of Israel’s military rule in the occupied territories, that the surveillance work they had been required to perform made “no distinction between Palestinians who are and are not involved in violence” and that information collected “harms innocent people” and “is used for political persecution.”

Responding to the criticism, the group of 43 protesters issued a statement saying that the letter from the other soldiers affiliated with the unit “does not contradict any of the concrete issues raised by our refusal letter and the testimonials that were published in Yediot Aharonot.”

Forty-three veterans of one of Israel’s most secretive military intelligence units – many of them still active reservists – have signed a public letter refusing to serve in operations involving the occupied Palestinian territories because of the widespread surveillance of innocent residents.

The signatories include officers, former instructors and senior NCOs from the country’s equivalent of America’s NSA or Britain’s GCHQ, known as Unit 8200 – or in Hebrew as Yehida Shmoneh-Matayim.

They allege that the “all-encompassing” intelligence the unit gathers on Palestinians – much of it concerning innocent people – is used for “political persecution” and to create divisions in Palestinian society.

The largest intelligence unit in the Israeli military, Unit 8200 intercepts electronic communications including email, phone calls and social media in addition to targeting military and diplomatic traffic.

The signatories say, however, that a large part of their work was unrelated to Israel’s security or defence, but appeared designed to perpetuate the occupation by “infiltrating” and “controlling” all aspects of Palestinian life.

Written in uncompromising language the letter states: “We, veterans of Unit 8200, reserve soldiers both past and present, declare that we refuse to take part in actions against Palestinians and refuse to continue serving as tools in deepening the military control over the Occupied Territories.”

Israel Was Founded and Led by Terrorists — More Things You Don't Know: Former Israeli Prime Minister Committed Assassinations and Massacres

One person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter.

One of the best examples of that may be the now-deceased former Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Shamir.

Shamir, who died at age 96 of Alzheimer's disease in 2012, was a member of the now-dominant political party in Israel: the Likud. When Shamir passed away, Netanyahu effusively praised him: "Yitzhak Shamir belonged to the generation of giants who founded the state of Israel and fought for the freedom of the Jewish people. As prime minister, Yitzhak Shamir took action to fortify Israel’s security and ensure its future."

In the days of the British Mandate leading up to the independence of Israel in 1948, there was a primary Jewish paramilitary force, the Hagannah. The Hagannah more or less evolved into the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) after statehood was established, and many of the state's military leaders for years were its veterans.

However, for some Jewish fighters, the Hagannah was too traditional in its military approach, too modeled on the British army … and not willing to engage in the assassinations of British soldiers. The British were seen by many Zionists as pro-Arab. They particularly incensed creators of Israel by aggressively limiting Jewish immigration to Palestine during the years of the Holocaust, and in the post-war years when Jewish refugees were seeking a place to live.

As a result, two Jewish terrorist groups were formed: the Irgun, and then an even more notorious offshoot which was nicknamed the Stern Gang. Shamir was a member of the Stern Gang, while former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin eventually headed the Irgun. Their mission was to drive the British out of Palestine, and also drive as many Palestinians out of what was to become Israel. The Irgun and the Stern Gang employed terrorist tactics, killing British military officials (and even the British minister of state for the Middle East) and massacring Arabs. Their most historically noted terrorist action against the British was the blowing up of much of the King David Hotel in 1946, then the headquarters for Britain overseeing Palestine. Around 100 people were killed, including 15 Jews.

Israel Flagged as Top Security Threat to US - According to New NSA Whistleblower Document

Israel is considered a 'leading threat' to the infrastructure of US financial and banking institutions, and a threat in the development of weapons of mass destruction.

Israel was singled out in 2007 as a top espionage threat against the U.S. government, including its intelligence services, in a newly published National Security Agency (NSA) document obtained by fugitive leaker Edward Snowden, according to a news report Monday.

The document also identified Israel, along with North Korea, Cuba and India, as a “leading threat” to the infrastructure of U.S. financial and banking institutions.

The threats were listed in the NSA’s 2007 Strategic Mission List, according to the document obtained by journalist/activist Glenn Greenwald, a founding editor of The Intercept, an online magazine that has a close relationship with Snowden, a former NSA and CIA contractor who fled the U.S. with thousands of top-secret documents last year.

In this new document, Israel was identified by the NSA as a security threat in several areas, including “the threat of development of weapons of mass destruction” and “delivery methods (particularly ballistic and nuclear-capable cruise missiles).” The NSA also flagged Israel’s “WMD and missile proliferation activities” and “cruise missiles” as threats.

From almost the moment of the downing of Pam Am Flight 103 by a sophisticated time bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988, the finger of blame was pointed at Libya and the government of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Led by the United States, governments of the West accused Libya of involvement in the bombing and the corporate media followed right along. The charade continued for decades and culminated with the imposition of crippling sanctions and diplomatic isolation on Libya; the families of those killed being lied to, manipulated, and exploited, and an innocent man being arrested, put on trial, convicted, vilified and hounded to his death bed.

The West Blames Libya
In 1992, after a four-year blizzard of anti-Libya/anti-Arab propaganda, the UN voted to impose sanctions against Libya. Part of the global puppet show required that Libya hand over an alleged perpetrator, Abdel Basset Al-Megrahi, who was placed on trial at a Scottish court in the Netherlands where he was convicted and jailed in 2001. Sanctions against Libya were finally lifted in 2003—after a decade—when the government of Libya capitulated to international blackmail and agreed to pay up to $10 million to each of the 270 victims of the bombing.

Every year, around the anniversary of the bombing (December 21), governments and corporate media re-start the propaganda parade, telling the world the "Libya-did-the-Lockerbie-bombing-and-the-perpetrator got-away" story all over again.

The United States government—and many other governments and corporate media entities—have been involved in a coverup of the key facts surrounding the bombing of Pam Am Flight 103.  The question is, why?

The Trial Was A Sham
The Chief Prosecutor in the Lockerbie trial, Britain's Lord Hardie, shocked the world when he resigned just weeks before the trial was to begin. At the time it was suggested Hardie rather resign than go further with a case that was thoroughly lacking in sufficient evidence and get caught "holding the parcel." A suggestion Hardie denied. Belief in the trial and conviction began to wane when witnesses insisted they never made statements attributed to them by investigators, and a key forensic witness against Al-Megrahi, admitted to lying and other deceptions during the Lockebie trial, including going so far as stealing a key piece of evidence and giving it to criminal investigators.

Al-Megrahi was ultimately granted a new trial on appeal in 2009. By this time the Scottish government no longer believed in Al-Megrahi's guilt. Al-Megrahi had always insisted on his innocence but was allowed to drop the appeal and return to die in Libya (he was gravely ill by the time he won his appeal).

Despite questions about his trial, and despite the fact that he was freed by the Scottish government and allowed to return to Libya, the chorus of "Libya was involved, and Al-Megrahi did the bombing" continued unabated. As part of the cruel charade, the United States asked the Western-backed rebels who had just overthrown the Libyan government and executed Muammar Gaddafi to "re-examine" the Al-Megrahi case. "This is a guy with blood on his hands, the lives of innocents," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland back in August of 2011. For the most part, the corporate media and US government never bothered to fully inform the gullible public about the facts of the sham trial.

Scotland Knew Al-Megrahi Was Innocent
In March of 2012 (11 years after Al-Megrahi's original conviction and three years after he won the right to a new trial), a Scottish newspaper published a report on the Lockerbie bombing that had been kept secret for five years by the government of Scotland. The full 861-page report was published by the Sunday Herald with the permission of Al-Megrahi. The newspaper admitted that it had "chosen to publish the full report online today to allow the public to see for themselves the analysis of the evidence which could have resulted in the acquittal of Megrahi." The newspaper went on to state that  "the report adds weight to calls for a full public inquiry into the atrocity – something for which many of the relatives have been campaigning for more than two decades."

The blockbuster report was all but ignored by the Western media and governments like the United States.

Pam Am Investigator Raised Questions About Libya's Involvement Early On
Long before the revelation of the report by the Scottish government, the results of an investigation on the Lockerbie bombing surfaced. The investigation was conducted by Interfor (also known as Interforce), a private intelligence contractor which bills itself as an "international investigation firm." Founded by "ex-Mossad agent" Juval Aviv, Interfor was commissioned by Pam Am after Pam Am and its insurance company was sued for negligence (letting the bomb on the plane) by victims' families.

The Interfor report exposed a tangled web of suspects that included a Syrian drug trafficker linked to Major General Richard Secord (Secord had become famous for his association with Colonel Oliver North and the Iran-Contra "Cocaine for Guns" fiasco. The secret operation by the Reagan Administration sought to arm rebels fighting against the Nicaraguan government with guns paid for by drug trafficking).

The Interfor report was presented to Pam Am officials as well as members of the US Congress. One member of Congress, Jim Traficant of Ohio, took up the issue. Traficant demanded an investigation and entered the report into the Congressional Record. Not long after that, Traficant was accused of corruption and hounded from Congress. The Interfor report itself was attacked and Interfor's founder, Aviv, was subjected to a systematic smear campaign, especially when the issue was raised about possible CIA foreknowledge of an attack on Pam Am Flight 103. Meanwhile, governments and the corporate media continued to sell the "Libya-did-it" hoax.

Latest Report: CIA Held Syrians Responsible

The latest nail in the coffin of the "Libya-did-it" scenario surfaced just a few days ago. A sworn deposition signed by a former US spy who worked in the Middle East, Dr Richard Fuisz,

shows the CIA believed that Syrians—not Libyans—were responsible for the Lockerbie bombing. Dr. Fuisz says he was told directly by his CIA bosses that Syrians operating under orders of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) carried out the attack on Pam Am Flight 103.

What We Now Know

We now know what the United States, Scotland, other Western governments and some members of corporate media have known all along: 1) The Lockerbie bombing trial of Abdel Basset Al-Megrahi was a total sham; 2) The Scottish government knew the trial was a sham, Al-Megrahi was innocent, and that Libya was likely not responsible for the Lockerbie bombing (and the Scottish government said as much in its own report); 3) Pam Am Airlines had information that suggested Al-Megrahi was likely innocent, and that Libya was likely not involved based on an investigation Pam Am had commissioned itself, 4) The CIA (and therefore the United States) did not believe the Libyans were involved in the Lockerbie bombing and blamed Syrians and the PFLP-GC instead. However, the United States continued to tell the public otherwise, perhaps to cover-up involvement of some of its "assets" in drug trafficking which perhaps resulted in the bombing of Pam Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie.

Many Questions Still Remain
Why the charade all of these years? Why were sanctions unfairly forced on Libya by the UN at the behest of Western governments? Why did Libya agree to hand over Abdel Basset Al-Megrahi and why did it agree to pay reparations to victims' families (most likely, Libya wanted to rid itself of the UN sanctions and avoid a threatened "Iraq-like" attack)? Most important: Why were victims families (and the world) lied to by the United States, Scotland, the UN and corporate media? 

Maybe one day soon the corporate media—and members of the so-called "progressive media"—will stop yelling "conspiracy theorist" long enough to seek real answers to these questions.
